Lunch at the beach can be a bit of a challenge. After a morning spent splashing in the tide, you’re sure to be hungry. If you choose something too heavy - perhaps fried seafood - you won’t want to get back into your swimsuit that afternoon. On the other hand, if you choose too light, your kids will end up having a hunger meltdown waiting for dinner. The Bagel Dock was a happy medium. This quick service bagel shop’s sandwiches were delicious and satisfying, even for my picky five year old.
The Bagel Dock is an unassuming sandwich shop. It may look simple from the outside, but step inside and you’ll discover a delicious selection of sandwiches, salads, and breakfast fare. Sandwich are served on bagels but can also be ordered on white or wheat bread, as well. The meat and cheeses are Boar’s Head, and all of the toppings are fresh and tasty.
Seating is available inside or out. We chose a spot outside and sipped sweet tea and enjoyed the breeze while waiting for our sandwiches. The restaurant was crowded with locals, always a good sign, but we only waited a few minutes for our food. When the meal arrived, everyone was happy with their choices.
My daughter decided to try something new - a turkey melt - and she loved it. My husband picked an Italian sub, and I had a bagel dog with a side of very tasty potato salad. My son ordered macaroni salad, which was a bit too sweet for my tastes, but his grilled cheese was decadent. The potato and macaroni salads were small, maybe 2 or 3 tablespoons, which were perfect for a light lunch.
After lunch everyone felt re-energized, and ready to return to hit the beach. The next time we are in Calabash, we will definitely grab lunch at The Bagel Dock.
