You’ll know you’re heading down into Southern Illinois when you begin to notice the flat stretches of central prairie giving way to a gentle undulation of wooded hills and valleys. Forests cover about 10 percent of the state, and most of them are here (the Shawnee National Forest spans the width of far Southern Illinois, stretching for about 70 miles).
