About Me & My Family
I'm a mother
3 Kids 5-13 years old boys and girls

When we travel, good food and adventure always abound. Our family loves to push the limit of what we can do with children. Our mantra has always been - have kids, will travel. However, this doesn't mean I'm unlike most frantic moms before a trip. Wanting adventure and being a control freak can sometimes be a lethal combination.
Our Family's Travel Personality
adventurous, curious, independent, spontaneous
We Just Got Back From
Maui
Our Favorite Vacation Spot
Hawaii, Montana, Lake Tahoe
A Place We'd Love To Visit
New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil, Eastern Europe, Italy
Favorite Vacation Memory
Climbing Machu Picchu with a 4 month old infant in a slight and having all the locals stop us to ask what happened to his feet which were all bundled up. They just couldn't believe it wouldn't be bow legged.
Worst Travel Moment With My Kids:
Getting to the airport on our way to Scotland with my 15 month old and discovering that my husband's passport had expired. Instead of rebooking all of our flights, we decided that I would do the first leg of our journey on my own with baby. Unfortunately, we had not packed for me to be flying by myself. I could bearly walk to the runway with all my bags and a 15 month old who would get distracted by everything along the way. He then proceeded to sleep only 1 hour of the entire 11 hour journey (red-eye). It was pretty miserable.

Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort By Diamond Resorts
901 Ski Run Boulevard,
South Lake Tahoe, California
"Not just for time share owners"
You don't need to own a timeshare to stay at this property. You can book this place on Booking.com. There are 3 different types of units at Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort. Studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom self catering apartments with kitchenettes.

If you like to save big on your ski vacation by eating in for breakfast and dinner, this property allows you to prepare simple meals like you would do if you were staying in a vacation home, while also having access to resort amenities like a kids club, spa, games, a fitness center, resort activities, and both indoor and outdoor pools.

This property is well maintained and the rooms are comfortable. The studios and one-bedroom units sleep 2 to 4 people depending on the bed configurations. The 2 bedroom units sleep up to 8. We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit which had a king in one bedroom, 2 queens in the second bedroom, and a sleeper sofa in the living room. The living room isn't big, but it's comfortable, has a fireplace. Each bedroom has it's own bathroom. The fully equipped kitchen is small, but enough to cook simple meals. If you prefer to grill, the property also outdoor grills. Laundry facilities are available on property, but not in the rooms.

Families will really like:
Having both indoor and outdoor heated pools is a huge bonus for families. Even in the winter, our kids loved being able to swim. For those with young kids who aren't ready to hit the slopes or need a rest day in between lessons. It's really fantastic that Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort offers a kids club program. Childcare at Heavenly is great, but it's expensive.

We loved the location of Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort. It's a 5 min drive to the California Lodge at Heavenly which has free parking and the best ski school program in Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel | kids travel, kids activities
Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel
4130 Lake Tahoe Boulevard,
South Lake Tahoe, California
"All suite style rooms, with breakfast, and talking distance to the Gondola!"
Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel is really popular with families. Why? In a nutshell, it's because their suite style rooms sleep up to 6 (2 queens + 1 queen sleeper sofa in the living room), your room rate includes a free hot breakfast buffet, and the property is within a short walking distance to the Heavenly Gondola. Oh and this hotel also has an indoor pool and spa.

This property used to be an Embassy Suites property, but since the change of ownership, it's undergone some much needed updates especially to the lobby and common areas. The rooms are still very much the same when we stayed there last in 2013. So, it's a little dated, but the beds are comfortable and rooms are clean. I do wish they would replace the sofa beds with ones that are more comfortable. A young child could be okay on it, but our older boys complain that it's hard to sleep on. However, if you are a family of 4, the two queen beds and separate living room with dining tablet and small kitchenette make these rooms quite perfect.

The free hot breakfast is very substantial. All you can eat bacon, sausages, eggs, potatoes and a rotation of other breakfast foods like pancakes, french toast, and fritatas. Of course there is the usual continental fair and fruit as well. The lines for breakfast can be very long on the weekends, so I recommend having the kids, roll out of bed, eat then head back upstairs to get changed. The kitchenettes in the rooms include a microwave, mini-refrigerator, and wet bar, so you can't do any real cooking. But there is a dining table in the living room, so if you wanted to order take out or delivery after a long day on the slopes, that is definitely an option.

Another big plus for families is the indoor pool and spa. It's not fancy, but our kids don't really care. All they want to do after a day on the slopes is jump into a pool or a warm tub.

The location of the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel could not be better. It's a 3 min walk to the Gondola (7 with kids and gear). The sidewalk is heated the entire way. We also love that there are a lot of restaurants within a short walking distance in either direction. (Highly recommend Basecamp Pizza in Heavenly Village). But if you're too lazy to head back out in the cold, the Echo Lounge Restaurant is their in-house restaurant serving a standard American menu with lots of dishes familiar to kids (burgers, pastas, salads). The food is solid.

Rates fluctuate depending on seasonal availability but all of Tahoe does in general. We've always found the rates at this property to be a good value.

Ski School at Northstar-at-Tahoe | kids travel, kids activities
Ski School at Northstar-at-Tahoe
Northstar Drive,
Truckee,
California
"Fantastic instructors who know how to work with kids"
We were excited to try out Northstar's Ski School because we had heard such great things about this ski resort's family-friendliness. We have been skiing for about 10 years with our kids (we have a wide age span between our 3 kids) at other Tahoe ski resorts.

I'm happy to report that indeed, Northstar has one of the best ski school programs among the ski resorts in Tahoe. The instructors were fantastic from drop off to pick up. It's clear that families are a huge priority at Northstar. Even as you pull up to unload, you'll find that Northstar has wagons ready for you to load all your ski equipment (and small children) into because the car drop off spot is a bit of a hike to the ski school registration area.

Parents drop off kids in the village and the instructors take care of getting your kids sized for the right equipment. This means that if your child does not have any issues separating, you can be in and out within 10-15 minutes. As a parent, having a quick drop off is a huge bonus, especially when it means you don't have to wrangle your kids with all their gear up the gondola. At Northstar, the chair lifts and the ski school areas are mid mountain.

The ski school bunny slope area is quite large, but cordoned off. If you want to watch your child learning to make pizzas and french fries, you can watch, but it's hard to get close enough for good pictures. During lunch time the the kids head into a nearby lodge dedicated to the kids school school for lunch. I liked that it is a separate area for safety reasons.

The instructors were very friendly, cheerful, and definitely experienced at working with kids. At the end of the day, I appreciated that she took the time to tell me what my daughter had been working on that day and how she was progressing.

Lessons are pricey at Northstar. At the time of writing this review they are the most expensive in Lake Tahoe. I do like that they offer private family ski lessons for a half day. If you have a family who can hit the slopes together and want lessons so each person can keep improving their skills, rather than paying for full day lesson for each child, the private family ski lesson is a great option and it allows even the more advance skiers or snowboarders to find something new to work on.

A few tip for parents:

- If you have non-skiers who want to watch or take photos of a beginner taking lessons, that non-skier would need to purchase a gondola ticket to get to the bunny slope area at the top of the gondola.

- if you are doing several consecutive days of lessons, you can't leave your rental equipment at the ski school after each day, you actually need to take the equipment home with you and bring it all back the next day. (I really like that at Heavenly's Ski School, kids can leave all your boots, skis, and boards at ski school.)

- On the final day of ski school, the pick up is a little cumbersome because you pick the kids up in one spot, then you need to take all your gear back to the registration area. A little extra work for mom and dad. Make sure you bring a change of shoes along with you on this final day.

"Love the synopsis of different experiments scientists do. "
While this isn't a big aquarium, I loved that they describe the questions scientists have asked and how they devised experiments to find out answers. You'll have to visit to find out how they figured out whether octopuses are intelligent.

Sharp Park | kids travel, kids activities
Sharp Park
Sharp Park Road,
Pacifica,
California 94044
"On a beautiful day it is stunning but on a foggy day it's so cold"
Sharp Park has is a dramatic, almost black sand beach. The walk along the sea wall is popular with dog lovers. On one side is the scenic Pacific Ocean with a pounding surf and on the other side is a lovely ocean front golf course lined with wind swept Monterey pines. It is also one of the most affordable public courses in the Bay Area. At the far end of Sharp Park is Mori Point which has come under the conservation of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Bootleggers Staircase is a great work out. At the top the long stair case, you are rewarded by a stunning view.
