About Me & My Family

We are a family of five. With three kids ages 8, 7, and 2 we are always looking for great family fun to help build special memories. We now live in Greenville, SC. Before moving here, we were in Annapolis, MD for five years. Originally from the South Carolina lowcountry, we are thoroughly enjoying the upstate and all it has to offer.

Sullivans Island Beach
1610 Middle Street,
Sullivans Island,
South Carolina 29482
"One of the best family beaches in SC"
Sullivans Island is probably my favorite beach in SC. You won't find touristy shops here, but instead beautiful wide beaches. There are a few restaurants, Sullivans being one of our favorites for simple seafood fare. The homes on Sullivans are old and beautiful with wide screened porches. You won't find the towering beach front homes that are competing with one another, but instead graceful homes that make you long to take a peek inside. There aren't rentals on Sullivans (unless you're lucky), these homes are occupied by real families who live here year round. And so, when you trek out to the beach, you'll find families enjoying the beach with their kids. There aren't lifeguards but you will occasionally find a policeman riding down the beach in a four-wheel drive golf cart. Take the kids and experience a relaxing day.

"Not necessarily a place for kids"
Brookgreen Gardens is a beautiful destination, but maybe not one kids will love. You'll find sculptures, gardens and some wildlife. For my children, the wildlife and gift shop were sadly the only things they found interesting. If it's something mom and dad want to do, the kids will do fine, just don't expect to hear, "Wow, Mom, that was awesome."

Splash Zone Water Park | kids travel, kids activities
Splash Zone Water Park

"Great water park"
Splash Zone Park is located inside the James Island County Park. It's a great family destination, especially for the younger kids. The park is clean and easily accessible. You probably will want to bring your own lunch unless you enjoy paying high prices for junk food. If you bring your lunch, you will not be allowed to bring it inside the Splash Zone, but the great thing is you're inside a county park that offers lots of picnic options.

"fun for a quick inexpensive ski trip"
This past winter, my family and two other families went up to Blowing Rock and rented a couple of beautiful houses and spent several days skiing on Appalachian Mountain. I wasn't sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. I spent a little over a year in Telluride, CO, and this is obviously not that. However, the place was great for a family get-a-way that didn't break the bank. We went during the week and there was hardly anyone on the mountain. At night, the college students come out, but even then, it was a great time with our kids and friends. We rented a house that was literally around the corner from the slopes. It was not walkable, however, because of no sidewalks and blind turns. We went in February, where we found that most of the houses offer your third night free! One of the few negatives, is that during winter, the town of Blowing Rock is basically closed. Instead of going here, you need to travel about 10 miles down the road to Boone.

"Kids love the USS Yorktown"
Patriots Point is where you'll find the USS Yorktown, an aircraft carrier used during WWII. This ship is amazingly fun to walk through with kids of all ages. (If you're claustrophobic this may not be your place.) You get to tour the majority of the ship and see where and how these navy men lived. My kids thought this to be one of the coolest places we've been. It does get hot, so be careful about going during the hot days of summer. Afterward, there is a very cool submarine to tour as well. Kids, especially boys, love this pace.
