Cottage Place on Squam Lake- like staying in your own lake house
The lakes region of New Hampshire is centrally located in the state. The region contains lakes ranging from busy tourist areas to quiet smaller lakes reminiscent of or actually used for scenes in the well-known movie "On Golden Pond". The Cottage Place on Squam Lakes is on a beautiful, quiet, clear lake. Staying at The Cottage Place on Squam Lake is like staying at your own lake house without the hassle of owning or cleaning!!!!
We recently stayed 2 nights with our 9 year old twins and 6 year old at the Cottage Place on Squam Lake. We were warmly greeted by hostess/owner Susan Smith. Sue has been the owner of the property since 2003. She is very familiar with the area having been involved in hospitality in the region for many years. She can provide you with many activities to busy your family while on the lake. She recommended for us the Science Center on Squam Lake, Experience Squam Cruises, a hike up Rattlesnake mountain and, of course, swimming and kayaking in the Little Squam Lake.
When we checked in, Susan supplied us with the requisite S'mores ingredients for the quiet fires we would later enjoy with other guests. She showed us our room and the rest of the Cottage Place activities. We were told there would be a fire outside later that evening so we quickly had our dinner so that we could return to have required quiet time later that evening. The Cottage Place encourages some down time without being 'plugged in' each night.(FYI: Wi-Fi and televisions are in each room) The fire certainly makes this easy. This allows families some downtime to connect after a long or relaxing day before heading to bed for the night. Susan can also provide you with a Family Adventure Pack during the winter seasons outlining tasks you need to complete with your family prior to check out. These packages are available starting at 295.00 per night and are also designed to promote family togetherness and communication.
The Cottage Place is a combination of various sized individual cottages, many with fireplaces, and large suite type accommodations with more than one area for sleeping. We stayed in the Cottage Suites which are attached to the office/curiosity shop.
Our air-conditioned suite was set up with a kitchen and sitting area, combined with a bed. The kitchen table overlooks the lake and we enjoyed making our own breakfasts and eating them outside of our room overlooking the lake. There was also another bedroom with a full and a twin bed which was perfect for our two daughters and son. Both rooms connected to the full bath. The accommodations are cottage-rustic chic. The rooms are decorated in handmade quilts and chintz as well as with wall hangings paying tribute to the lake. I espied a cottage unit which was also quite rustic with wide board floors and a fire place. The cottages are not air-conditioned. We were glad that our suite had A/C as we visited during a heat wave, but while we were there the heat wave broke and we were happy to open our windows to let in the fresh lake air. Although we visited during a full house, the open windows did not preclude a quiet sleeping atmosphere. Every family was very respectful of sleeping hours both in evening and morning.
The Cottage place is situated directly across from Little Squam Lake with beach frontage and chairs available for guest use. There are also sea-kayaks, sand toys ,floats and a boat dock from which you can launch a boat or hire a private guide to give you a tour. (see Experience Squam lakes). The lake itself is very clean. The kids enjoyed building sand castles, swimming to the swim dock, and snorkeling for creatures such as fish and crayfish. We were also lucky enough to spot several Loons from our porch across the road on both mornings.
The Place is teaming with children of all ages. There is a playscape set back from the road as well as a shuffleboard area and of course the beach area (lifevests available at the office). We found that there was a large extended family group that had rented a few of the quaint cottages and seem to come back year after year to enjoy the lake. There is also a large Lodge available to accommodate a group that might want to stay together.
Dinner at the Cottage Place can also be a 'family affair'. The Inn provides a grill and picnic tables and the rooms have full kitchen facilities so many nights dinner can be served pot luck which of course the kids adore. There are also two restaurants in very close driving proximity for those expecting a more quiet dinner.
The cottages range in price from $85.00 to $285.00 per night depending on season and size. The contained suites range $125.00 to $250.00.The Cottage Place is open year round. Pets can also be accommodated for a nightly fee.
I would highly recommend the Cottage Place on Squam lake for a family oriented lake vacation.
Pros: Quiet, family friendly area
Beach; beach toys, sea kayaks, swimming area
Clear, clean lake
Boats and pets accommodated
Grocery store and restaurants within a few miles
Con: Beach area across street so not easy to walk back and forth with kids
No lifeguard. You must watch your kids.
A/C available only in suites. Not a problem most times of year, just during heat waves!!!!
This review is based on a complimentary stay at the Cottage Place on Squam Lake. I received no other compensation besides the hotel stay and the hotel did not state any requirements that I express a particular point of view.
