The Mark Twain House & Museum has restored the author’s Hartford, Connecticut, home, where the author and his family lived from 1874 to 1891. Twain wrote his most important works during the years he lived there, including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.

"Diamond in the rough!"

My only "complaint" about the Mark Twain House & Museum is that visitors are prohibited from taking photos during the home tour.

Parking is ample, venue is well-equipped for large groups (scouts, classrooms, big families like ours), and  handicap accessible (museum only). The staff is knowledgeable, witty and friendly. Mama Rycerz has toured this house numerous times with various groups of kids, mostly 2nd-4th graders. However, this is a GREAT date night/"let's play hooky" location! Steeped in local history and the fact that Mark Twain just plain ROCKS, the house and museum offer much for all ages.

The museum also has an on-site cafe on the second floor, a gift shop with interesting baubles (looking for that perfect Mother's Day gift?) that I'd recommend keeping sticky little people hands out of is located on the first floor. The restrooms are well kept and easy to get to.

Be sure to check the website and/or call to inquire about special events before planning your visit. During the summer, the house hosts a concert series; other seasonal events are usually posted on the website and/or local papers.
