At Cooper’s Gem Mine, the kids have the rare opportunity to pan for precious gemstones.
You can buy a bucket of ore and take it out back to a clear-running country stream, step
up to the sluice, and wash away the dirt and sand. What you find you keep. Although no
diamonds have been found yet, owner Barbara Lawson said that plenty of other stones,
from rubies to amethysts, have been uncovered.
The flumes operate seasonally, but the inside gift shop, which specializes in handmade
crafts, and the rock shop are open year-round. Barbara went to school to learn jewelry
making and can mount your “found” treasures into pieces of jewelry.
Brochures with a map to the gem mine are available throughout the area, or you can
call Barbara at the aforementioned number.
