First Camping Experience
Newbies to Boy Scouts are invited to attend their first overnight camping trip at the Bovay Scout Ranch. Meals are provided cafeteria style. Bathrooms and even showers are available if you don't mind a little grunge and bugs in your stall.
We pitched our tent in the early afternoon with our den, an assigned group of about a dozen families who were strangers to us. The ranch is spacious and generally flat. We did not get assigned to camp near the lakes, although the waterfront setting would have been preferable.
Afternoon activities on a superhero theme included: BB Guns, Archery, Sling Shots, Air Rockets, Leather and Cape designs, and Bead bracelet and Mask making.
We walked to our evening campfire, which was a bit of a disappointment. No s'mores and no memorable campfire song activities. Back at the tent, sleep soon overtook us. We woke up the next morning to the mellow mooing of cows wishing it were the cockadoodledoos of roosters. Sleeping on the floor was a rough experience, especially with fire ant hills rampant on the ranch, but thankfully, nobody was hurt and the mosquitoes stayed away.
