What are Good Toys to Bring Along Camping?

by: Jessica Nugent and LiLing Pang

First things first, do you even need to bring toys along when camping?

Truly, one of the best things about camping is that kids of all ages re-learn how to amuse themselves with the simplest things.  You might think of bringing a few toys, but my recommendation is to bring just a few simple toys for your youngsters.  Perhaps a few animals they can integrate in play with sticks and rocks.  Keep it open ended and tactile.  The fresh air, new sights, sounds and new textures provide plenty of stimulation once kids learn to unplug from their regular amusements.

When left to be imaginative with their play.  You’ll discover how resourceful they are, but if you just can't resist, you might consider bringing some of these toys.

Toys for Open-ended Play

Sand toys

Beach balls

Plastic Animals (bring those you don't mind loosing)

Spray toys

Bug Vaccum

Magnifying glass

Binocculars

Games

Simple pack of cards.

Uno

Go fish

Sporting Equipment

Bicycles and Helment

Scooter

Arts and Crafts

Side walk chalk or paint

Great list! I would add storytelling games. One of the best ones out there is the game Think-ets. And, Think-ets Genius comes in a tin so it's perfect for camping.

Oh yeah, and kid sized fishing poles (even if there isn't a lake) camping is a great time to practice casting, pretend fishing, or go ahead and bait the pole (Cheetos work best) and use it to lure snipes out of long grass (trust me, they will do this for hours!)
