Many of us will be hitting the road over the holidays. If you have a long road-trip ahead of you, here are some survival tips for navigating your way around buys holiday roads.
Picking The Right Time To Start
- Check the weather a few days before you hit the road. If there is any chance you might hit a snow storm, plan to leave earlier or later and make sure you have chains handy.
- Consider timing your departure so that a bulk of the driving is done in the evening when the roads aren’t as crowded so you can make good time.
Plan for traffic and the unexpected
- Make sure you have lots of healthy snacks with you so you can keep going for as long as possible without stopping. If you get stuck in traffic close to a meal time, you'll be glad to have a something to tide the kids and yourself over before you can get to a decent place to eat.
- Make sure you have lots of entertainment for the kids and ideas for entertainment on the fly.
Top Travel Games and Activities for Kids
- Even if you have a GPS phone or GPS in you car, always get a quick idea of what the directions are. That way you’ll already know what to expect to hear from your GPS. A back-up map in the glove compartment or from the rental car agency is always good to have too.
- Charge your cell phone and load it with all the important numbers you need ahead of time.
- Bring ziplock bags in the car for accidents or kids throwing up from motion sickness due to stop and go traffic.
