Best Portable High Chairs for Traveling

by: Esther Lee, Kailani

My family loves to eat and often outside of the house. The food is key, but the company is just as important. As a result, making sure that the littlest member of the family can join us during mealtimes wherever we are is of the utmost importance. Here are the best portable high chairs rated by Trekaroo families to make sure Junior has a comfortable dining seat even on the road.

The Most Portable Travel High Chair:

Snazzy Baby Travel Chair (Avg price: $30)

When I'm traveling with my kids, I'm always concerned about eating out with them. Believe it or not, not all restaurants have  high chairs available and even if they do they're not always in the best shape. I thought the only other option was to hold my squirmy child on my lap while trying not to drop food on her head when I ate. Then I found out about the Travel Chair by Snazzy Baby.

The first thing I noticed was how compact it was. The entire case measured 7" x 5" and weighed less than a pound. It's made from a nylon-type material which makes clean-up a breeze and it's also lightly padded for comfort. The carrying case is attached to the back so that when you're ready to go, you just roll everything up and tuck it inside the bag. You could probably even do this with one hand while holding your child with the other.

And it was super easy to use. Just wrap the strap around the back of any chair, attach the clip, and adjust for a tight fit. That's it! There are also adjustable shoulder straps to ensure that your child won't slip out.

The Snazzy Baby Travel Chair is so portable that it won't take up any room in my suitcase or add any bulk to my diaper bag. It's great for families on-the-go.

Pros:

  • Super compact and light (7"x5"; >1 pound); rolls up and fits in any diaper bag
  • Easy to clean, machine-washable
  • Lightly padded for comfort
  • Easily cusomized to fit any seat

Cons:

  • Not sturdy enough to keep newly sitting babies or active/imaginable kids fully upright and restrained
  • No height adjustment mechanism if you have a shorter child

The Best All-around Travel High Chair:

Fisher-Price Healthy Care Deluxe Booster Seat (Avg price: $30)

My son is about to turn 3 and the Fisher Price Highchair has been absolutely fabulous. Made of industrial grade durable plastic, this seat has survived the car, the plane, 2.5 years of use and still manages to look brand-new. The smart design renders the seat free of crevices and is super easy to clean with a Clorox wipe.

The seat features three height adjustments and two straps on the rear and bottom that allows for a secure fit. Rounded back and padded chairs are a bit more challenging, but easy adaptable. Based on 755 reviews on Amazon for this chair, the Fisher-Price Healthy Care Deluxe Booster Seat is ranked 5 stars. Here's a quick snapshot of the pros and cons.

Pros:

  • Easy to clean, crevice-free
  • Durable construction
  • Easily customized to fit any table and seat height combination
  • Foldable and portable especially for the car
  • Safe 3-point harness to keep children up to 45 pounds securely fastened

Cons:

  • Small for bigger sized kids
  • Doesn't pack down flat ( 15 x 8.7 x 12.9 inches; 6 pounds)

Runner-ups

phil & teds MeToo high chair (Avg price: $50)

We got the phil & teds MeToo chair because I love all of their other products and figured why wouldn't their portable high chair be great too. It came just in time for a trip out to Hawaii. I loved the fact that it folded flat into the suitcase and only added a mere 2 pounds of weight. However, I was totally bummed, when we arrived at our vacation rental home and the dining room table was GLASS! The edges were wood, but the glass panels in the middle rendered the phil & ted chair useless. We still use it, but only when we've checked with our destination hosts on the type of tables they have.

Pros:

  • Folds up flat and compact (13"x1"; about 2 pounds)
  • Easy to attach design. No need to adjust for table or seat heights
  • Secure design with shoulder straps and harness
  • Brings the kids literally right to the table

Cons:

  • Not applicable to all tables. Doesn't work on tables with a "skirt"/lip, glass or a tabletop that is more than 2" thick
  • No back support
  • Hard to clean because you can't remove the nylon seat from the metal frame
