The first time I laid eyes on Mohonk Mountain House, my jaw dropped.  It truly looks magical.  If you have a child who loves castles and you’re not planning a trip to Europe anytime soon, take a short drive from New York City and be transported to a place fairytales are made of. Even if you don’t plan to spend the night, families can visit for the day. In the Spring, Summer and Fall (April to November-ish) families can enjoy swimming, boating, and fishing in cool, clear Lake Mohonk, hiking and horseback riding on 85 miles of well-maintained trails, plus tennis, croquet, shuffleboard, golf (on a nine-hole course).  In the winter, Mohonk offers an ice-skating rink, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the stunningly beautiful Hudson Valley.

If you have never taken your children to a limestone cavern, this will be an eye opener for them.  It’s a great lesson on not judging a book by its cover.  They will be totally surprised to see what lies inside an ordinary looking rock.  Be sure not to give away too much about what to expect to protect the element of surprise.  Kids can also enjoy gemstone mining, biking and hiking above ground.
