During a recent trip to Kauai, while riding the shuttle to the rental car company, my technique for carrying a carseat on my backpack became the talk of the shuttle. I frequently travel by myself with my two kids, 4 and 6. When renting a car we need a full size carseat and a booster seat. We also usually travel with 1-2 check bags and we each have our own backpack as carry-on. I need my hands free for the checkbags and for holding kids' hands across the streets and needed a better technique for moving between baggage claim, shuttles to rental car companies, and rental cars.
I hook a 3" caribiner on the handle at top of my backpack. I close all of the straps on the carseat, as if my son was sitting in it. Then I set the carseat on the ground or in a chair and set the backpack in the carseat, with the strap side of the backpack facing forward in the carseat. I hook the caribiner through the handle at the top of the carseat (or use the shoulder straps if there isn't a top handle). Then I slip my arms into the backpack straps and standup. The backpack sits inside the carseat and the carseat stays snug on the backpack without swinging. To take the backpack off, I just sit down on a bench and slip my arms in again.
I usually clip the booster seat onto the top of one of the check bags using either the suitcase strap or a caribiner. I have however, buckled it inside the carseat before clipping it to the backpack. While this works very well, the weight can become a little much if going a long distance.
Love this idea! Thank you so much for sharing! Any advice on booster seats to try? We've just outgrown the car seat and thought that you might have some good advice. Thanks again for posting this!
We have three booster seats, one made by Graco, on by Evenflow, and a generic brand that we picked up while travelling. Frankly they are all about the same. My daugter says the Evenflow is her favorite because it has the most padding behind her knees. I believe that it is the most comfortale because she chooses to use the gray seat over the pink one (the generic). I personally like the Evenflow seat for a very different reason. It has an opening at the back base that is large enoug to hook check bag tags, a caribiner or even a latch system hook. So, when we are travelling, the Evenflow booster is the only one I can hook easily to everyhing else. I would like to point out why I like I can ook a latch clip to the booster - you don't ise the latch clips to secure the booster. I have a latch hook extended out long enough so as not to interfere with the function of the booster but use it to hook the booster to the seat. It helps keep the booster in the ar when the kids are getting out and gives me piece of mind that if I am in a crash when the kids are not in the car, I am not going to have a booster fly forward and hit me in the head.
I apologize for all of the typos, I should not use my phone for replying.
We are testing out a Clek booster. Love everything about it because it's super sturdy and comfortable. It can even recline. The Clek booster also clicks really easily into the latch system to keep the booster very steady. My only reservation is that for travel, it's quite heavy. But you can invest in the bumblebum for travel. We have review of the Bumblebum on Trekaroo under the tips section.
We've also traveled with our Combi booster and it's light enough and without the back, it can fit nicely in a duffle bag. But I'm still tempted to purchase a Bumblebum for travel.
I too wear my car seat as a backpack. It is often the topic of conversation in the airport. My daughter is three and we travel between 2 and 4 weekends a month. I travel with her by myself and have had to come up with crafty ways to carry everything. Because it is the safest way and the best way to keep her in her seat the whole trip I always bring her car seat. She uses the Graco Myride 65 and it's one of the bigger car seats. I clip the safety clips in a way to create back pack like straps. I then pull them tight to fit my frame. That leaves my hands free to pull my bags and hold my daughters hand.
