Picking Pumpkins

What is your favorite place to pick pumpkins with the kids and why? I live in DC, but I am sure folks in other towns would love to know too.

What a great idea! I live in NC now and would love to know what is in this area. In Illinois we always, ALWAYS, went to Goebbert's Pumpkin Farm in South Barrington. They are FABULOUS! http://www.pumpkinfarms.com/ is their website. There are other very good farms in the area, but Goebbert's is the best - my kids just LOVED going there and every year about this time would BEG to go.

Half Moon Bay is the pumpkin capital of the bay area. Every year there is a pumpkin festival and you can see these super big pumpkins and carvings that look like sculptures. There are several farms there - Pastrorini on Hwy92 is really elaborate - they have a bouncy house, train rides, hay rides, pumpkins and more. My favorite is Farmer Johns just south of 92 on Hwy 1. I love it because it's a huge pumpkin patch and kids get to walk in the field where the pumpkins were grown. It's simple old fashioned fun. I like that. They also offer hay rides and there is a pyramid of hay kids can climb up as well as farm animals.

Another over the top farm is Arata on Hwy 1. They have a hay maze, train rides, and all sorts of other amusements. of course you pay a lot for every activity so what could be a perfectly fun time just picking pumpkins becomes an expensive outing focused on rides instead. But many families do like this place.

In Vermont we like to combine pumpkin picking with other Fall Fun activities like Harvest Festivals, hayrides, apple picking, pie fests. Right now we are in full swing for those activities! Every weekend there are at least 4 Harvest Festivals going on so it is hard to choose which is best!
