We hope to take our first sleep-away vacation later this year. As my husband and daughters (11, 9 and 8 by the time we go) have never seen the ocean, we've selected Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The 11 year old loves history and art; the 9 year old is a bit of a daredevil who loves animals and the youngest has a big thing for plants. Fortunately, they all have enough interest in their sisters' favorite things to keep whining to a minimum.
With those details in mind, what are some of the 'musts' at Myrtle Beach or nearby?
PrincessTripmom,
What a great question. I haven't been to Mytle Beach myself, but I am sure some of the other Trekaroo families have and will pitch in with some great suggestions. Would those of you who have suggestions be willing to write reviews of some of these places too?
And if one of you gets inspired, create a list using our list feature and share it with all. It'll be a great way to get your inside scoop out there.
Check out Alligator Adventure and Ripley's Aquarium. Both of those have webpages and are very interesting. Not sure how much money you will have to spend on sightseeing, so you may want to check and see if the tourism dept. has discount tickets, etc. Both are interesting, but Alligator Adventure is mostly outside and Ripley's is inside, so keep the weather and temperature in mind. Have fun!
Myrtle Beach is a great place for families. We generally stay a little south of there in Murrells Inlet. It's close to all of the attractions but away from the crowds on the beach. A few places I'd recommend are:
Captain Dick's Dolphin Tour
Ripley's Aquarium
Marlin Quay Marina Parasailing (if you are really looking for a daredevil experience)
Myrtle Waves Water Park
Huntington Beach State Park (the nighttime tour of Atalaya is a little spooky but not scary)
I have reviewed a lot of other nearby attractions but these are the ones that I think would be a good fit for your family. We have vacationed in the Grand Strand since was a little kid and I love it there!
Myrtle Beach is a great place for a vacation. There are many, many things to do. One of the considerations is how much you want to spend on activities, as most of them are quite expensive. I would suggest taking advantage of all the coupon books in the lobbies of the hotels and resturants as most will offer a bit off the price to many tourist attractions.
Of course the beach is great for sand castles and wave boarding.
Alligator adventure
Huntington Beach State Park
Ripley's Aquarium, will be super busy on a rainy day
The Gardens are beautiful, but not super kid friendly
Captian Dick's Dolphin Tour
We love Myrtle Beach, hope you have a great time!!
Thanks for the suggestions. We've actually focused on the Murrells Inlet, Garden City and Surfside Beach areas when searching for condos or homes to rent. I'll be sure to pick up a coupon booklet so we can stretch our dollars. The Visitors Guide I received in the mail had a few coupons in it, too.
If you're looking for a condo to rent in the Murrell's Inlet area, check out Inlet Pointe. Garden City Realty and Dunes Realty both rent from there. They are across the street from the beach (really short walk) but on the inlet. The complex is gated and there is a pool and a pier out over the inlet. Just be aware that if you choose an upstairs condo, there is no elevator. Also, make sure to stop by Sam's for a really good footlong hotdog. Sam's is one of those iconic must-do places. They are right across the street from the pier! Have fun!
Ripley's Aquarium is always fun.
