Hope this isn't too late of a reply... just saw this thread!
Our favorite campsites are in Cedar Grove, Kings Canyon National Park. They are first come first served campsites in a beautiful area of this national park. Most of them do not fill up which provides for the quiet and serenity we love when camping. Bathrooms, running water, creeks to play in and a river to explore, with most campsites shaded by tall pine trees makes for nice ammenities. There is a small general store, a lodge, and a small nature center near by. This is a beautiful place to get away from it all. Near by are waterfalls, hiking trails and a cavern tour.
In Yosemite, our favorite campsite is Upper River. This is a difficult place to get reservations but the activities, options and beauty are beyond compare.
Bridalveil Campground and White Wolf are 2 great campsites up above the valley in Yosemite (one on the north side, the other on the south). They are good spots near by outlying favorite spots. Bridalveil is close to Glacier Point, Taft Point and Sentinel Dome. White Wolf is near Tenaya Lake and Toloumne Meadows. Both are first come first served and are beautiful. It can be very cold at night in these higher elevations.
Bass Lake Campgrounds (many different sites near the lake) offer waterfront recreation activities in a beautiful wooded area. Wonderful place to camp.
Doheny State Beach offers beach front camping in Dana Point. Warm Southern California weather makes this a nice beach camping spot. Near to all southern California destinations and ammenities.
These are some of our favorites that we've enjoyed through the years!

Just saw this tonight.

We were at San Mateo Memorial Park this past weekend- my new favorite campsite in the bay area. The Homewood Flat group sites are massive. Set along a mountain river in the deep quiet of a redwood forest, this place hits my sweet spot for a private wilderness feel that is close to home.

Camp Richardson in Tahoe is alot of fun. Its right next to the lake and there is a beach and volleyball courts, an ice cream stand, and a water front restaurant nearby.

I know this thread is kinda old, but I have to chime in about Lake Lopez campground. If you ever do another article on this subject you should consider adding Lopez! It is near the city of Arroyo Grande and has a lot of amenities. There is fishing, boating, kayaking, and windsurfing on the lake, many hiking or mountain biking trails, a campfire time on Saturday nights, and even the Mustang Water Slides. We go every year with extended family and we have a blast. It is one of the few places where we can tent camp right alongside my parents who camp in a trailer and require all the hookups. (In many CA campsites, the tents are segregated into a different area so it's inconvenient to camp with friends or family who can't be nearby). You can catch a bus from the ranger station that takes you down into the Village of Arroyo Grande or even the Pismo Beach Outlets. This camping destination offers fun for everyone.

I know...way behind on this one! Our favorite is the La Jolla Indian Reservation in Pauma Valley, east of San Diego. They have a river that runs through it & you can rent innner tubes to tube the river for $10 per day. There are hiking trails; a small market with food, firewood, sundries, etc.; and restrooms. It's one of the only wooded campgrounds that still allows open fires.

I have now officially made it my mission to get to that La Jolla Indian Reservation campground this year! It sounds awesome and exactly like what I miss about living in Northern California.
