We are trying to use public transportation and are staying in South SF. Does BART go up to the Golden Gate Park area?
BART doesn't really cover the westside of San Francisco (really only the Mission, Civic Center, financial district / Embarcadero). If you want to take BART, the closest it will get you is to the Glen Park station, then take the 44 bus from Bosworth & Diamond for about 20 minutes to the California Academy of Sciences. If you have a bunch of kids and a car, it might make more financial sense to drive. You can find free parking nearby in the park.
If you're ever trying to figure out public transportation around the bay area, go to google maps and type in your start and end point and then select the "train" icon at the top and it will give you public transportation directions.
Thanks! We decided to drive on the day we go to the park and CA Academy of Science, and then take BART on the day we go down to the Embarcadero. We finally figured out google maps train/transit info but it was a bit confusing. Not sure if we were looking at buses, bart lines, cable cars, light rail or what. We're looking forward to seeing the city!
