We were excited to go to Mars 2112. We had heard of the spaceship ride and the grand ambiance. We were almost immediately disappointed save for the loopy professor host. The ride that takes you to Mars from Broadway was supposed to be a type of motion-movie ride. It was broken, but my kids wanted to wait anyway. The sign said the ride had been closed since November 2010 and was now an educational movie. Really what it was was the same movie from the ride, but with no movement. After our 30 minute wait for our ride we waited some more in the arcade area with our 3 kids. I realize this is a money maker for the restaurant, but do they have to be so obvious to make us wait for our table while the kids beg for money to play the games, more than half of which were not working or not age appropriate for my 6 year old.
Once we finally descended to our table we were impressed by the overall decor of the room, which is large and lively...right up a kids alley (maybe not so much for adults). The room was red and aliens were shuffling about and had a performance once and hour(?) that they invited my daughter to be part of. She loved that!!!
The food was okay. Like you would expect at an airport etc.The nachos were covered in Velveeta. This is what you might expect. The wait staff was attentive, but not overly friendly. Everyone just seemed exasperated. The bathrooms were run down and dingy. It appears as though they have not sunk any money in the place for a while with the ride broken, the arcade machines not working and the dingy bathrooms.
That being said the kids enjoyed themselves, but we will probably steer them elsewhere the nest time we visit NYC. Maybe the Jekyll and Hyde themed restaurant.
Mars 2112 is a Mars-themed restaurant right smack dab in the middle of Midtown. The idea is that you board a rocket ship and end up on Mars for lunch or dinner! The atmosphere is fun with the extraterrestrial decor and the Martian newscast running on a loop. Several "Martians" visit during the meal for pictures with the kids.
The food is so-so at best but the prices are reasonable for Midtown. The characters are a bit seedy with their costumes in need of repair. Overall, not someplace I would go with my husband but the kids enjoyed it and it was reasonable for the area.
I really really really wanted to be blown away by Mars 2112. The concept of a restaurant set in space had me imagining being transported into scenes from Star Wars. Unfortunately, the experience wasn't as awesome as I wanted it to be.
We were there on a Monday night and the upside is that we didn't wait at all to be seated. (they don't take reservations in Nov and Dec). The downside is that the whole atmosphere was kinda lackluster because the dining room wasn't buzzing with activity. The best thing about Mars 2112 is the decor. I give them 5 stars for decor. The food was decent. I usually don't expect much from theme restaurants. In particular, the quality of their kid's menu was really good and the portions were generous. The adult menu wasn't as inventive as the names they selected for each dish. Basically your standard American favorites - a few renditions of burgers, a few pasta dishes, a few fish dishes. The quality of the food was okay, but nothing imaginative or exceptional about the execution. I was imagining at least some interesting plating and presentation. We only tried the entrees...so maybe there might have been other interesting presentations for appetizers and dessert.
Overall, I just felt that the whole concept while totally intriguing, was still missing something. You know how when you go to Disneyland and you feel fully transported into a different world? Mars 2112 endeavors to do the same thing. When you first arrive, you go into the "space ship" and take off for Mars. This consists of watching a video about taking off, entering space and then landing. The video was fine, the spaceship was cool, but I was imagining some multi-sensory experience where the seats would shake like you are taking off.
In particular, I was disappointed that the staff weren't too convincing. Everyone was nice and cordial, but they weren't in character. There were only two aliens walking around doing exactly the same rote gestures and greetings. As my 7 year old said, "it would be so much better if everyone dressed up" and took some acting classes. You know how at Disney, the whole theme park is considered a stage? Everyone who works there down to the janitors are referred to as cast members. That attitude was not the same at Mars 2112. The staff just didn't make it feel convincing that you had entered a different planet. Everyone was just so normal.
Mars 2112 has got to be one of the most wonderful places in NYC that I've ever been with my kids. The food was amazing and the atmosphere just blew me away. I felt like I shrunk down to being ten years old again when I was at Mars 2112 because I was as excited as my kids. The prices were not bad and the service was good. Even if the food was horrific (which it isn't by any means), just the experience you get in the restaurant's atmosphere would make it all worth it. DO NOT PASS IT UP IF YOU GET THE CHANCE!!!!
We had tried to come here before and the wait has been 2 hours long to get inside. This time we lucked out!
When you enter you are put in a space simulator and when you emerge the other side you have entered another world....Mars. Look carefully and you may find some aliens lurking about.
The food is average fare and typical NY overpriced. They offer a package where you can receive a game card to the arcade, which my son loved. The arcade was small but has all the usual games.
Service was good, our waiter was very attentive.
My son LOVED this restaurant. On a scale of 1-10:
Decor/Atmosphere: 10+
Service: 9
Food: 6
Price: 5
There is a gift shop with all things outer space. You can find little trinkets for a few dollars up to major purchases.
Will we go back? Maybe....only 1 of the kids got to experience it!
