A factory in Chinatown producing fortune cookies. See them made fresh and buy some for yourself.
You can bring home a bag of 40 fresh fortune cookies for $3. Take home a bag of 40 fortune cookies for $3. And consider combining your visit with a guided tour of Chinatown.
It felt like we found a secret spot in San Francisco. It is definitely a hidden gem in a back alley but your nose can find it for you! Where else do you get a chance to sample a fortune cookie still warm, fresh from the oven! They have various flavors available - we picked up chocolate and vanilla swirled to bring home! Definitely worth a stop!
Interesting place. It felt on some level like going back in time. It's free to get a peek at how fortune cookies are made and what a work shift in the factory is like. This place is bigger than the Mee Mee Bakery (a fortune cookie competitor in China Town also offering a peek into their factory). The bigger size mesmerized my kids. Don't linger too long --- I theorize that the most boisterous worker is purposely seated at the front of the place near where viewers stand. After about five minutes or so, she began telling us to go buy cookies. I'm going to stop short of stating that she demanded it because I think her simple lack of command over the English language made it only seem that way. One other thing you should know, taking a picture inside the Golden Gate Factory will cost you 50 cents. Just remember, you are barging into their workplace.
A part of a self guided walking tour which I obtained from About.com. A very small place that was very busy. We used this company 10 years ago to make cookies for our wedding and felt they were worth the visit. After seeing it I was surprised when my wife told me she found them online. Stop in to check it out but don't go all the way there if that's your only place to see.
If you're in Chinatown, it's worth making a stop at the Fortune Cookie Company. You step into a tiny store, get to see the women making the cookies at the machines, and get a sample. They have some bagged cookies to buy for about $5. It can get crowded if there are more than a few tourists at a time, so you may not get to hang out in there for longer than five minutes.
Workers sit at machines from the 1920s, twisting fortunes into hot cookies as theycome off the press. You are welcome to step in and sample the goodies.
It's really just a hole in the wall shop in an alley off Chinatown. We always stop by the fortune cookie factory if we are in Chinatown. The kids enjoy watching the woman making the cookies. Best of all, they let you sample the cookies. Our favorites are the almond cookies, we always bring a bag home.
This is a neat place to go. Its an actual fortune cookie factory. You can watch them make the cookies, take a fresh one, and also purchase some different varieties for the trip home. Kids will love it.
