When our family chooses a restaurant, we don't just look at the quality of the food (which is, of course, important!). We are always on the lookout for restaurants with a kid-friendly atmosphere. To us, this means it is loud enough to drown out a talkative toddler yet still allows us to enjoy a family meal. It also means that we don't feel like we won't be welcomed back if a couple of chips hit the floor. Cosmic Kitchen is one of the few places in Homer that fits the bill. The menu includes burgers, Mexican, and even seafood entrees at dinner time. They have unexpected sides like sweet potato fries, and a salsa bar with a couple of options that my kids actually like- pineapple salsa, anyone? The kids menu has the standard fare (quesadilla, grilled cheese, etc.) but is a little on the pricey side. Then again, dining out in Alaska is not cheap anywhere.
Ordering is done at the counter, and then you choose to sit inside or venture out to the deck, which has plexiglass walls to protect from the wind but allow views of the bay, mountains, and passing cars. While you wait on your order, you help yourself to the salsa bar and your drinks (which can be a little difficult with small kids). We prefer to sit outside, where the kids are entertained by the view while the adults enjoy their meals.
Cosmic Kitchen also serves breakfast. They are closed on Sundays.
