Rivers are the claim to fame for the 20 counties of Western Illinois. The mighty Mississippi forms the western boundary of the region (and the state), and the smaller but lovely Illinois defines its eastern edge. Floods during the 1990s made life along the waterways especially tough, but most of the people who live in the river towns sandbagged their way through the hard times and are still around to affirm the area’s peaceful beauty.
