The stretch of Gulf shoreline from the so-called Big Bend south to Sarasota and its environs undergoes many mood swings. At its northern reaches, mangrove coast replaces barrier island beaches, meaning less development and a more natural setting. Midway down begins the parade of islands that trickles down the coast to the southern tip of Florida. With the pretty islands in their sandy skirts come resorts, attractions, and sun-seeking tourists. Big-city Tampa and sister city St. Petersburg form the center of activity along this stretch.
