Driving through the small towns of Virginia’s Eastern Shore takes you back centuries. Accomac, for example, has buildings that date to 1632. On Tangier Island, accessible only by boat, the residents can trace theirancestry back to Elizabethan times. Virginia’s 70-mile portion of the Delmarva Peninsula (named for Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia) is dotted with small towns that received their names from Native American words such as Chincoteague, Wachapreague, and Onancock.
