Nantucket’s unique character has much to do with its distance from the mainland— it’s a good 30 miles out to sea. Unlike cosmopolitan Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket (which means “faraway island” in the Wampanoag language) is more traditional and less crowded, even during the summer. Moors cover a large percentage of the island, and its bike paths and long beaches make for wonderful family vacations. The stocky Brant Point Lighthouse is one of New England’s shortest beacons (it’s just 31 feet high); it’s also one of Massachusetts’s most photographed spots.
