Southeast Florida—home of Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and other giant resort towns—is the first Florida many get to know. From the north, you first enter Palm Beach County, stretched long and lean along the coast. At northern extremes, this foray into the state’s most populated, metropolitan area meets with lightly trodden wilderness. Then the city life begins and doesn’t end until 100 miles later, when you’ve left the Fort Lauderdale–Miami area for the eccentricities of the Florida Keys.
