You are now leaving Florida and the United States as you know it and entering the world of the Florida Keys—part Bahamian, part Caribbean, and part plain unclassifiable. This becomes especially apparent the farther south you travel, the farther you range from what dictates and concerns life on the mainland. Incidentally, the farther south you drive, the smaller the numbers become on green markers alongside the road. These mile markers (MM) are the Keys’ answer to street addresses along Highway 1, also referred to as the Overseas Highway.
