"Last fall we drove from KC to Pittsburgh, PA and we had a blast. We took I-70 almost the whole time. Assuming this is similar to your route here is what we stopped and did:
*St. Charles just west of St. Louis (this is on the northern loop of the city not I-70): the historic part of town is fun to walk around and we stopped at the Lewis and Clark Boathouse and Nature Center (we loved it-I wrote more about it in my trekaroo passport)-its the perfect size for a toddler/preschooler's attention span.
This was great place to stop for lunch for us and stretche our legs.
*Indianapolis: The Children's Museum http://www.childrensmuseum.org/ I haven't gotten around to writing my review of our visit-but it was amazing. We could have easily spent a whole day there. There was a playscape area for toddlers/preschoolers, puppet shows, lego kingdom and a ton of hands on exhibits were a toddler could wander around and have fun. This is an away winning childrens museum and I can see why.
*Columbus, OH: I had two favorites that would be good for toddlers. We had a great time at COSI-a kids science city/museum type of place. It's all hands on and tons of fun. http://www.cosi.org/ For toddlers there is kidspace, ocean room, and gadgets --all of which my son would have loved at 2yrs old. We also had fun at Battelle Riverfront Park running around and having a picnic.
We have traveled with our son since he was 9months old everywhere. The key to travel with a toddler is to except their attention spans for what they are-short. We bring a portable dvd player with dvds of his favorite t.v. shows and movies. We also bring crayons and pads of papers, books, toys, etc. A toddler can entertain themselves with a toy airplane or truck for 15-20 mintues. With our son, the key is stopping and stretching every two hours or so (now that he's older we stop about every 4 hours) and to stop before the melt down. Each stop doesn't have to be a long 2 hour event at a kids musuem, it could be running around a park (or frankly a sidewalk down a residential street) and picking up rocks or leaves to look at. They just need to move.
What also saves us is my son loves to swim, so we always book our hotel at a place with a pool (indoors during cold months). We end each travel day in the pool. "
Thank you
