About Me & My Family
I'm a mother
3 Kids 3-11 years old boys and girls

When we travel, good food and adventure always abound. Our family loves to push the limit of what we can do with children. Our mantra has always been - have kids, will travel. However, this doesn't mean I'm unlike most frantic moms before a trip. Wanting adventure and being a control freak can sometimes be a lethal combination.
Our Family's Travel Personality
adventurous, independent, spontaneous
We Just Got Back From
Massachusetts
Our Favorite Vacation Spot
Hawaii, Montana, Lake Tahoe
A Place We'd Love To Visit
New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil, Eastern Europe, Italy
Favorite Vacation Memory
Climbing Machu Picchu with a 4 month old infant in a slight and having all the locals stop us to ask what happened to his feet which were all bundled up. They just couldn't believe it wouldn't be bow legged.
Worst Travel Moment With My Kids:
Getting to the airport on our way to Scotland with my 15 month old and discovering that my husband's passport had expired. Instead of rebooking all of our flights, we decided that I would do the first leg of our journey on my own with baby. Unfortunately, we had not packed for me to be flying by myself. I could bearly walk to the runway with all my bags and a 15 month old who would get distracted by everything along the way. He then proceeded to sleep only 1 hour of the entire 11 hour journey (red-eye). It was pretty miserable.

Guide to Historical Sites in Massachusetts with Kids

For anyone interested in understanding the foundation of American life, a visit to Massachusetts is a must. This state has always played a significant role in U.S. History from the very founding of this country to this very day.

I did not grow up in this country but arrived when I was 18.  Since then, I've been learning about what makes America, the country it is today. The more I learn, the more intrigued I become. I want my children to feel proud to belong to this country. So, a few months ago, with two kids (5th and 2nd grade) ripe for a historical trip to the Northeast, we decided to "land with the Pilgrims" and make a way through the 17th, 18th, and 19th century. As we visited each historical site, history came more and more alive to all of us. In so doing, it lead to some intriguing observations and discussions of who we are as a nation today.

Whether you have a child who loves history or one who doesn't care that much for it, it'll be hard not to stoke an interest in the lore of this land as you make your way through our favorite historical sites of Massachusetts.

Kid-friendly Big Island Scenic Drive on the Hamakua Coast

The scenic drive along the Hamakua Coast on northeast side of the Big Island is one of the best scenic drive to do with kids.  The scenery is stunning, the drive isn't too long, and there are lots of places to get out and see something interesting.  While the eastern side of the Big Island isn’t quite as developed as the western side with it’s big resorts, it’s rich in pictureques views, hidden beaches, and a distinctly local flavor.  It was hard to remember we were still in the United States as we drove by roadside stands selling coconuts.

This itinerary begins at Hilo and ends at Honakaa.  You can complete this drive in a couple of hours without stopping, but where is the fun in that?  Instead plan to stop at some or all of these spots with the kids and make a day of this scenic drive.

Kid-friendly Summer Fun in Big Sky, MT

Big Sky Montana is often known as a winter ski destination, but this summer, our family discovered that Big Sky is a pretty awesome summer destination for families.  My 6 and 9 year old boys are just about ready to pack up and move in permanently.  Less than a hour away from Yellowstone National Park and in one of the most beautiful places on earth, Big Sky is a ski town that is arguably even better in the summer time.  Even if you aren't an avid fly-fisherman, here are some truly wonderful experiences your kids will treasure.  Best of all, in the summer, there are some great deals on premier family-friendly lodging to be found in Big Sky.  The closest airport is in Bozeman, just an hour away which has direct flights from 14 major cities.  I would recommend families renting a car, but there are also a number of shuttle services like the Yellowstone Luxury Tours that operates a fleet of super comfortable SUV's that make the drive a pleasure.

Kid-friendly Fun at Shasta-Trinity National Forest

Spend the cool morning trying your luck at some of the biggest trout in Northern California, the afternoon, splashing in a musical bubbling brook, and the evening, star-gazing into the clearest night sky. The Shasta-Trinity National Forest is a vast and largely undeveloped area where the wild is still wild.  While most young families may shy from a backcountry backpacking trip through the Trinity Alps, there are still a number of fun ways families can enjoy the Shasta-Trinity National Forest with it's many lakes and rivers.  There are three main lakes where many of the area's activities center around - Whiskeytown Lake, Lewiston Lake, and Trinity Lake.  All are quite cold.  The area is also famous for fishing and the Trinity River is one of the best whitewater rafting rivers in California.

Here are some of the highlights we uncovered when we visited last summer and stopped local families we bumped into for their recommendations.  Be prepared to do quite a bit of driving between different attractions...but one thing's for sure, there's no lack of places to enjoy nature's playground.
