About Me & My Family

My husband and I met climbing. Our first date was in a kayak and we got engaged on top of a mountain. We wanted to get married on a boat but too many people were scared they would get seasick. We love the outdoors, being active and adventurous. Our son SC will literally climb the bookcases if we don't get out and play.

Wilder Ranch State Park | kids travel, kids activities
Wilder Ranch State Park
1401 Coast Road,
Santa Cruz,
California 95060
"Relax, Picnic. Climb Trees or Hike the Coast."
Located 4 miles north of Santa Cruz, off Highway 1, Wilder Ranch State Park is kid friendly and fun. Some of the best attractions are on the front lawn by the Historic Victorian. This includes a giant aloe “tree” with exposed roots for multiple toddler-friendly tunnels, as well as, a bald cypress tree with great branches for kids of all ages to climb. There is a chicken coop in the back and barns full of antique tractors and horse drawn plows.

If you want to do more than relax and picnic, hike along the Old Landing Cove Trail. Stroller and bike friendly, this wide level path winds along the coastal bluff. The beaches below are home to pelicans, pigeons, seals, sea lions and a large population of snowy plovers.

If you have older children, challenge yourself to steep mountain bike ride up Ben Lomond Mountain. You can also bring your horses and explore the equestrian trails.

On Sat Dec 19th, 2009, the park will host Holidays on the Ranch from 11-3pm. Visitors are invited to watch Living History demonstrations, create wreaths, candles, sing around the piano and decorate the tree. Seasonal goodies can be sampled by all.

Big Basin Redwoods State Park | kids travel, kids activities
Big Basin Redwoods State Park
Big Basin Redwoods State Park,
21600 Big Basin Way,
Santa Cruz,
California 95006
"Majestic Trees and Hikes for Everyone"
California's first state park is covered in Redwoods and sprinkled with waterfalls. Stretching from the Skyline to the Sea, with over 80+ miles of trails, Big Basin has something for everyone.
The half mile Redwood Loop trail is perfect for new moms with strollers and toddlers who want to hike but aren't ready for something long or strenuous. The Skyline to the Sea trail is perfect for the more adventurous family that is ready to attempt a long 13 mile thru hike or overnight backpacking camping trip. The closest waterfall, Sempervirens Falls, is just 2 miles from the entrance- perfect for the family who has just half a day to explore.
My favorite thing to do at Big Basin doesn't even start at the entrance. Start from the Pacific Ocean/ Waddell Beach Entrance. Ride bicycles 5 miles up the fire road on part of the Skyline-to-the-Sea trail. Park at the provided bike racks and hike the half mile to Berry Creek falls, one of the most majestic waterfalls in the park at 60 feet tall.
Big Basin is great for a day trip from the Bay Area or camp overnight in one of 146 campsites.
