About Me & My Family
Roaming Indigo. Traveling the blue world, inhaling peace and calm.
My name is Stella Dryden, and I love the world and the variety of people in it. I want my children to understand a reality outside their small community. My husband and I have traveled with our little wonders since they were merely months old. We have enjoyed road trips and international destinations, the world’s biggest banjo and the Eiffel tower. Along the way, we’ve amassed travel tips and ideas that may help you plan for your vacations. Our family has really been blessed through these experiences; I hope others may be, as well.

Favorite Vacation Memory
With my family, driving through the middle-of-nowhere Kentucky trying to find a distillery, we topped a hill and encountered the most beautiful scene I've ever witnessed. It was tranquil and peaceful and filled to bursting with significance and something of the eternal. A steep hill on our left, a line of gently swaying trees lined the entire street for miles on our right. Horses ran in their field, the steeples of their stables poking up in the distance. It was breathtaking. Even years later, the smell and feel of that day stay with me.
As a child, we had a picnic in Rocky Mountain National Park just outside of Estes Park. Dad and I opened a bag of oreos, and a deer ran out of nowhere and nabbed the bag! We had a tug of war with the deer, who eventually got away with the entire bag. Visiting again seven years later, the entire scene played out again!

Buffalo Trace Distillery
113 Great Buffalo Trace,
Frankfort,
Kentucky 40601
"Buffalo Trace has a lot to interest kids"
An informative video about buffalo that used to roam the area held my kids attention, and pushed my son to pick a buffalo ball cap from the gift shop. While parents sample various delish bourbon, kiddies can sample free cups of root beer. No body gets left out here!

French Quarter New Orleans
Bourbon Street,
New Orleans,
Louisiana
"There's nothing like NOLA"
The French Quarter is New Orleans! Don't miss beignets from the Cafe du Monde (go mid-day to avoid a bazillion hour long line). The kids stood amazed at every corner. Street performers and artists and musicians. Horses pulling carts of relaxed tourists. Buildings and courtyards that will make you swear you're enjoying Europe. This is seriously one of America's gems. Don't think because you have kids NOLA's not appropriate. Plan to hit a parade of an evening (in March we stumbled onto the Italian American parade right on Canal street). Your kids will come home loaded down with beads and stuffed animals, crazy glasses and dime-store toys.

Henry Doorly Zoo
3701 S 10th Street,
Omaha,
Nebraska 68107
"Go for the aquarium. It's worth it."
I personally can't stand going to the zoo. I'm the odd one out who occasionally draws the short straw. So once in awhile I have to walk around and see smelly creatures. This is the zoo to do it. Walking from air-conditioned building to air-conditioned building is the best way to enjoy the zoo. The aquarium is very beautiful: so blue and sharks swimming right over head. The children always enjoy seeing the jelly fish, too.
There's a desert dome and a rain forest. Even I look forward to a visit.

River Market of Kansas City
3rd Street & Walnut Street,
Kansas City,
Missouri
"The Largest Market West of the Mississippi"
Come early summer to early fall on a Saturday morning. And come early. The sights and sounds are unparalleled anywhere around Kansas City. Enjoy the Italian market, buy fresh pitas (still hot!) and spices, buy fresh produce and potted plants. Local performers might range from a sixth grader boldly playing a scratchy violin, to modern dancers and those famous jazz musicians. Grab lunch at Bo Ling's, a fabulous Chinese restaurant that offers indoor and outdoor seating options. Or grab a Minsky's pizza and watch the game on one of a ridiculous amount of over-sized flat screen tvs.
