Lakeway Resort and Spa on Austin's Lake Travis is a good destination for families wanting a laid back vacation or short break with their family. Swimming and the kid-friendly water slide are the main family attractions at the resort. There is also the Champions Day Camp which enables parents to have some alone time to relax, work out in the fitness center, enjoy spa treatments, or even hang out at the adults only infinity edge pool with swim up bar. Be sure to check ahead of your visit to see if camp is in session, it wasn’t when we were there. Children can also golf and play tennis nearby but these seem to be activities geared more towards adults. The on-site restaurant that serves lunch and dinner offers finer dining (which is great for a family resort) while still offering kid friendly options.

Rooms
Our room had two queen beds that were very comfortable with down comforters and plenty of pillows. The towels and 2 adult sized bathrobes were nice and absorbent. The TV had pay per view with a few kid friendly options. The bathroom was a little small but still enough room for an adult and two smaller kids. We were on the top floor and had great view of the lake and the surrounding hills. Wifi, cribs, rollaways, connecting rooms and suites are all available as well.

The Grounds
The resort has 3 pools. One is a water volleyball pool varying in depth from 3’6” to 9’. There is the family friendly pool that varies from a beach-style infinity entry to 3’6”. The very shallow part of the pool has sprinklers and a fountain for kids to play in. This pool is attached to a smaller pool that is 3’6” deep and is where the water slide empties in to. Unfortunately, during our visit there were some mechanical problems with the water slide, so we didn’t get to try it out. The third pool is the adult pool which also includes a hot tub and is attached to a full service swim up bar .

Around all of the pools there is plenty of seating for lounging and snacking with umbrellas for shade. Cabana’s are available for rent as well. Waitresses are on duty to bring drinks and food from the snack bar; very convenient for families! One of the coolest features of the pool area is the fire pit. When camps are in session, and on holiday weekends, they do s’mores, how fun!

On-Site Dining
The resort has four restaurants. There is the snack bar by the pool, the Back Porch in the main building, the Travis Room (breakfast), and Josey’s (lunch and dinner). All of the restaurants have indoor and outdoor seating. We ate dinner at Josey’s. The food is definitely finer dining than many lake resort restaurants but they have a good range of prices. Salads start at $7, sandwiches with a side for $10 and entrees between $15 and $25. We really enjoyed our meal. The sandwiches are inventive, basics with a twist. You can eat as healthy as you like or really enjoy your vacation and go for the burger or the chicken fried steak. The restaurant has a full bar and a pretty extensive wine list. We were happy that the restaurant allowed us to order macaroni and cheese for our kids even though it wasn’t on the menu. The kids’ options are also reasonably priced and pretty basic: grilled cheese, burgers, chicken strips. I doubt most families would have a problem finding great dinner options here.

For breakfast the following morning, we went to the Travis room and had the breakfast buffet. It was decent, just a normal buffet with cereal, pastries, pancakes, eggs, oatmeal, bacon, etc. It is $12.95 for adults and free for kids 5 and under, a great savings!

Overall Experience
We enjoyed our stay at Lakeway Resort & Spa and our kids had a blast! I would consider going back during the week when the rates are lower, but probably wouldn’t go on a weekend when the rates are over $200 a night. However, if they offered a package that included more amenities in the overall price, I would definitely consider it!

Hickory Street is a very reasonably priced restaurant in downtown Austin. It is convenient to the Capitol and other downtown landmarks. The burgers are great as are the soup, potato and salad bars. They also happen to have a good Sunday brunch! Great kid options are available as well :)

Moonshine is a nicer restaurant in Austin. Very close to downtown and the convention center. I would probably not take my kids here for dinner. However lunch and brunch are great and have tons of kid friendly options. All you can eat brunch buffett is worth the money!!!

Garrido's is one of our favorite places to eat out in Austin. We like good food and want to expose our kids to it as much as possible. We have been here several times with our kids and they are always happy. Good brunch, lunch and dinner. You can order their tacos a la carte too so it is very affordable but in a nice setting. Margaritas aren't bad either ;)

Hudson's is a wonderful restaurant - that happens to be very accomodating for children on holidays and at special events. This is a pretty adult restaurant but we have taken our kids there once a year or so since birth. That being said - they always do something that isn't on the menu at our request and are very very polite about it. They have a neat outdoor garden where much of their herbs and produce come from. Our kids like to walk through and play. It is a little on the expensive side but great for special occasions.
