"Flying with your kids"
Flying is a big part of our families' lives. My hometown is 3,000 miles away and so are both sets of Grandparents. Work sends us out of town quite often too. Might as well make the best of it.
Here are some Travel tips for you to consider. The journey from the time you wake up to the time you get to the airport is usually longer than the flight itself. We focus so much on in-flight activity but are never quite prepared enough for the trip to the airport and for the unexpected delays. If you can help reduce your kids' stress before getting on the plane, the plane ride will be that much easier. If travelling in the morning, let them stay in their jammies until the airport, make it a fun waking up experience. Even though we can't bring liquid through security, have some handy for the few hours till you get to security. Have them cart around their own "suitcase." It's very empowering, even for a two year old (just keep an eye on the bag)! Bring 1or 2 toys that they currently play with for their own comfort for the travel and for when they get to their final destination. Practice play "airport security, especially nowadays with extra security your child may get pulled aside and patted down and the more you can help mentally prepare them the better. Take an extra couple of minutes (if you are not late for your plane) to ride back and forth on the flat escalators. This may be the highlight of their travelling experience. Have your kids "be in charge" of the tickets (not the real ones of course! Get a few extra baggage tags for them to "be in charge of." My most important tip is keep your carry on bag light, very light. You will end up with so much more in that bag than you counted on. That I promise.
Safe Journey!
