About Me & My Family

My hubby and I each cut our travel teeth early on road trips to visit family throughout the Western US. We use air travel now more than we did as kids, but often travel for the same reason. We learned to pack light a la Rick Steves for our Parisian honeymoon. With a preschooler now in tow, we've altered our style a little, spending more on a comfy hotel room (suites if possible) and frequenting the local parks, wherever we may be, rather than spending big on attractions. As a Nutritional Educator and foodie in general, I try to find good food options all the while.

"Momprenuer does okay-ish"
I love the food here. What they have is easily 4+ stars. But it's a limited menu...and I mean very limited. And this location has a habit of not being open for weeks at a time, and for the moment, on tuesdays only from 11am to whenever they run out of food. I really wish "Betty" (the owner, who sports a neon blue wig, and who used to be seen running the show with child in an Ergo carrier) would actually use twitter or facebook to announce any openings on a case by case basis, so I'd have a way to check before schlepping down for the delicious egg salad or way-too-spicy-for-most-kids signature fried chicken sandwich (whole chunks of jalapenos in the awesome cabbage slaw, which can also be ordered as a "salad" if you want to skip the bread but still have the greenery and fried chicken breast). The lemon ice is one of the only drinks, though also a little too tart/sugary for most kids. They also have an assortment of baked goods...I'm not fond of the scones, but the cookies and pies are good and the shortcake is fantabulous...more on that later.
Finally, saying that there is outside seating is misleading. Stools set next to ironing boards along the sidewalk is the only seating after standing in what can often be a long line (noon is the worst). If you've got little ones who eat in their stroller, it might work. If you're kid can barely be contained, like mine, do what I do, and order when they're preschool. However, get a strawberry shortcake and share it with the little ones later for dessert, cause wow, it is spectacular.

"Great kids menu"
We ate here for brunch on NYE and I was really impressed. The food isn't as good as it should be for the premium price but I was pleasantly surprised by the options available on the kids menu, including grilled salmon. My son ate every bite which says a lot to me. The staff was friendly and he was made completely welcome, and was even offered his own balloon by the staff blowing them up in anticipation of the nights adult revelries.

"No avoiding nuts"
I have an on again, off again relationship with the entire chain, but I'll admit, when I am looking for a pile of tasty veggies, or a vegan key lime pie that will knock my socks off, this is the spot. But for kids, I must point out that everything, and I mean EVERYTHING here has nuts. They make heavy use of cashews and other nuts for milk and thickeners. So if you've got a child with any nut allergies, stay far far away from this place.

"Restaurant AND hotel!"
This review is about the restaurant alone, but FYI: it is also attached to a hotel which I will try to review as well.
The staff at the restaurant handled my 3.5yo really well. He sauntered in the door and announced that he wanted pancakes...and salad. The hostess rolled with it, and let him know he could get salad, but pancakes were only available in the morning ;) We were seated in a booth giving him room to move around without being too disruptive to others, and was quickly given a sippy cup of water w/ straw, and the obligatory crayons and menu to color.
As I write this, I am enjoying the leftovers of the kids Mac and Cheese, with medium elbow pasta and a blend of white cheeses (no orange cheeses for those picky eaters). It's delicious with a good blend of not too bland and not too strong cheeses, though my son ended up eating more of the steak that we ordered (which was also tasty, though not 5-star out of this world). Other options included a PB&J, a hamburger, among the normal suspects.
For adults, the entrees and beer were good (though Deschutes Brewery down the street is better). The service was prompt -- not what I would consider fast, but not really slow either.
So though it may not be culinary brilliance, it was a pleasant meal with my preschooler, so 4 stars seems about right.

Phoenix Inn and Suites Bend | kids travel, kids activities
Phoenix Inn and Suites Bend

"Good for adults and kids"
It's a little more expensive than some others in the area, and is not as "boutique" as it suggests on its website, but the Phoenix Inn is perfectly located in Bend for enjoying the great downtown area. There are so many parks, bars and restaurants within a short walking distance, you will not lack for activities for adult time or kid time.
At one corner of the parking lot is a staircase leading down the small hill to a quiet-ish street with a great coffee shop for your morning cup-o-joe (with Portland's finest beans from Stumptown) but the coffee they brewed in their step-up-from-basic breakfast buffet was surprisingly good. A particularly nice feature of the hotel was an array of kid friendly options in the bike rental kiosk right outside the front door.
Allergy sufferers should beware: we asked for feather free, but after checkin they were only able to find one feather free pillow and the beds had down comforters. Obviously that may be a big plus for winter months, but not for us. Also, the scented products in the room were quite overpowering when we entered, but our trusty travel air purifier made short work of the smell.
As a suite, the room itself was comfortable & large, with a sitting area and table, in addition to the two queens beds. But it was all one room, plus bathroom, something that wasn't clear in the room descriptions.
