Newport Aquarium
One Aquarium Way,
Covington,

"A great aquarium"
We love this aquarium - no doubt there are some better, such as chicago's. But for us it is the convenient location that sets this one aside. Parking is a bit difficult but arrive early and you should find street or lot parking with out too much difficulty. Watch the posted times though as you don't want to get caught with a parking ticket. The prices are fairly high but comparable to other aquariums. The aquarium itself is very well done, with heaps of animals and displays. We like the otters! Note you need to park your stroller at the entrance. There are plenty of food options in the surrounding area, ranging from cheap and cheerful to fine and fancy- so take time for lunch as you leave.

Mammoth Cave National Park | kids travel, kids activities
Mammoth Cave National Park

"Big Cave best for older children"
Mammoth cave is certainly mammoth and due toits size many tours are very long. And it may seem obvious (its a cave after all) but the walking is strenuous - up and down, not strollers etc. Also on most of the caves there are no below ground facilities (bathrooms or food/beverage). On the very long tours there are bathrooms and small kiosk. So be careful with timing your tour if you have littler ones. Also in vacation periods tours book out early so be sure to book a few days ahead - by phone or online. That way you will have a better choice of times and tours.

Biltmore Estate | kids travel, kids activities
Biltmore Estate
1 Winery Approach Road ,
Asheville,
North Carolina 28803
"Adults will be more excited than kids"
It americas largest home - a estate of gigantic proportions build by the Vanderbilts in the days of excess and glory. Everything is grand, huge, majestic... well there just aren't enough words to do it justice. The grown ups are going to ooh and aah. The kids are going to yawn and say can we go now, can we go now.. The tour is self guided but will still take a LONG time - its americas largest home after all. There is little of interest to young children in the house and the grounds don't have all that much either. You can head down to the farm animal area but it is underwhelming after you have done the house tour. Leave this one for your empty nesting travel days.

Brookgreen Gardens
1931 Brookgreen Drive,
Murrells Inlet,
South Carolina 29576
"Beautiful Sculpture garden"
This is a great placefor high energy kids to run off some steam. The "gardens" consist of large areas filled with mostly bronze scultures. The sculptures will appeal to young kids fantasies - there are ltos of birds, animals, fantasy figures. And with some creative parent input you can have some wonderful imaginary play. This place is much better suited to the family who like to create their own entertainment that ones that like to be entertained. There is also a small zoo with a good selection of animals that kids will enjoy. And a boat ride on the creek.

Magiquest | kids travel, kids activities
Magiquest
1185 Celebrity Circle ,
Myrtle Beach,
South Carolina 29577
"Its fun for a price"
Magiquest is indoors so a good pick for a rainy day - off ourse you will share wit everyone else. It is aimed at elemetry age kids and is essentially a fairytale adventure. The main draw back is the cost. Upon entering you need to purchase a wand (and if you like a bunchof extra gizmos - wandtoppers etc), time to play the game and of course there is a gift shop!

I suggest for parents with pre-K and under kids that you purchase one wand per adult as the kids won't be able to work the adventure for themselves - it requires some skill to flick the wand at the correct angle at the TV screens and objects. Once inside you have a lesson on using your wand and how to play the adventure. You are then free to explore and work through the story line much as you would a video game. There are numerous screens and objects that the kids "zap" with their wands to create the story and plenty of cheesy decorations which appeal to the kids. We also suggest random zapping as you run around the room - this gets you more "gold" which can be useful later one in the games play.

It was not crowded when we went but on busy days acess to certain "rooms" is likely to be limited and your time will dwindle very quickly. Even on the quiet day we were unable to complete our adventure.
