"Great Updated Science Museum - Better for Older Kids"
I brought my 4-year old to this, and while he was able to enjoy the Construction exhibit (using a crane to move dirt here and there) and appreciate the small live creature section of the museum, it was clear that this is a museum which would be far more enjoyable for kids 8 or older, where they can learn about physics, chemistry and other sciences in an entertaining way.

"A Solid Aquarium and Not Too Crowded"
Having been to larger aquariums in Boston and Baltimore, I was quite impressed with the aquarium in Mystic which had a good balance of marine exhibits and interactive activities such as the shark and ray petting tank. You don't get "small town" prices at the Mystic Aquarium, but you do get an big-city quality aquarium which seemed a lot less crowded. Culinary hint - go to the very good "Go Fish" restaurant next door for dinner or lunch (joking to the kids that you're eating the aquarium habitants is optional).

"Pales Compared to Philly's "Please Touch""
There are worse ways to spend an afternoon in Manhattan, especially if the weather's bad, but this Children's Museum pales in comparison to the Please Touch in Philadelphia. There are age appropriate exhibits and activities for kids from toddler through 8 or so, but there's just not that much given the limits on space.

Lehigh and Keystone Model Railway Museum

"Small Wonder for Very Young Train Lovers"
It's a very small museum, which probably can be completed between 1-2 hours, but my son (who adores trains) loved this place. It has a number of running model train sets with landscapes along with a set which allow the kids to press various buttons to turn on a lighthouse, blow a horn, etc.

Please Touch Museum
4231 N. Concourse Drive,
Philadelphia,

My kids (4 and 1.5) loved this! There is plenty of age appropriate things to do and they particularly loved the water play exhibit, where they get to use boats and dams adjust the current. We went in the late afternoon a couple of hours before closing, which ended up being perfect to avoid the crowd.
