River Rate Canoe Rental

"Fun, lazy day on the Muskegon River"
We rented a 3-man canoe and spent 3.5 hours floating down the river. The canoe was a perfect size for 2 adults and 2 small children. We made a few stops along the way to get out and swim. There were 25 of us as part of a family reunion weekend activity. Most rented a 1-man kayak, which was great fun. They coul easily manuever the kayaks to go up and down the river, meet up with different people throughout the group, tip themselves into the river to cool off, and make stops along the way. The river was perfect - deep enough for non-stop floating, but with enough shallow spots near the banks for wading and swimming. This was the first time my family went on the river, and we look forward to it again next year, perhaps trying the kayaks!

White Fence Farm Restaurant

"Delicious fried chicken meal, family style"
When I was invited to the White Fence Farm, I was not sure what to expect. It turns out to be a restaurant first, with lots of nostalgic-style decor. The restaurant is super poplular, particularly on the weekends. They only open for dinner. We arrived a few minutes after opening on a Saturday, and the restaurant was half full already! By the time we left, we saw there was a short wait to get to a table. But it is worth the wait! We had chicken - fried chicken, chicken strips, and chicken nuggets. The chicken and the french fries were the best, and the small dishes of cole slaw, bean salad, cottage cheese and corn fritters were nice appetizers that come with the meal. The food is good quality, and we had a lot of food for the money - I can see why the place is popular. There is a petting zoo, but we only saw a few chickens. There is a display of antique cars with a lot of miscellaneous items - music boxes, hood ornaments, dolls, old-style children's shoes, toys.... You may need to bring a roll of quarters for the video games, an old-style fortune telling box, rides for small children. Our friends remembered the restaurant from 50 years ago! If you like the slower pace of an old-time style restaurant, then this is a place you gotta visit!

"Did not meet expectations"
We selected this hotel thinking it was a good place for families, given that there is a water park at the hotel. The water park is small, good for families with small kids during a slow, non-crowded stay. We stayed in a standard room - a king size bed with a sleeper sofa. One disappointment because it was not communicated on the website: they would not provide a rollaway cot because it would violate fire codes. Another item not communicated ahead of time: a $100 security deposit is required at checkin. We stayed over the New Year weekend, and it turned out that there were special activities on NYE for the family to celebrate. However, I believe that the staff was overwhelmed with the large number of people during the holiday weekend. This showed up in a number of ways: no early check-ins, our keycard expired at the end of the 1st and 2nd days without explanation, did not clean the room unless I called to request a cleaning, the same hot breakfast was served all 5 days of our stay. The hotel is probably fine for a one- or two-night stay during a slow period. But we will not likely return since we stay for many nights when we are in town visiting family.

Batavia Popcorn Depot
1 N Water St,
Batavia,
Illinois
"Don't blink, or you will miss this!"
A friend brought me to this tiny stand/shack that serves freshly popped popcorn - plain, cheese, and caramel. It only opens during the warm weather months from 6pm-9pm. What a treat it was for the entire family to buy popcorn and eat it as we walked around the Batavia Riverwalk.

"Great for the little and big kids"
We stopped by after work recently, so we paid the reduced rate. The little kids had a blast making sandcastles, running into the water and through the fountains. They also checked out the kid-sized water slide. We brought our own sand toys. It was fun to watch the bigger kids do cool-looking dives at the deep end. Great way to spend an hour before heading out to dinner on a summer afternoon!
