"Big Falls in the spring."
This is actually a bit past the lake up a mountain road and then a hike into the falls. We were told that the falls were running high this past spring. The creek alongside the trail was full of salamanders. We named it salamander creek. I've never seen so many. The falls were beautiful and there was a pool below that one could swim in if you don't mind cold water. It was definitely one of our best adventures this year. We love nature and the exercise was good too. It is not for the faint hearted or really out of shape folks. A truck or other sturdy vehicle is needed to get to the entrance of the trail.

"Spring wildflowers in California Valley"
I've wanted to see these for years and finally made it this last spring. This area is quite desolate most of the year and has very little accomodations. I left our icechest on the counter in my kitchen and our water spilled in the trunk on the drive there! Bring lots of water and any food you may want to eat! There is no where to get either.
The area has been designated a national monument in the last few years. There are local tours to see painted rock. A very informative but small visitors center is there. We purchased a great dvd about the area called Hidden in Plain sight.
The wildflowers in the spring are incredible. There is also a soda lake that reflects the wildflowers that adds to the visual appeal. One can get a wildflower guide and identify many of the flowers blooming in the spring.
Although it was an adventure and my boys liked it, they also said, "this is it"?! They were expecting something different although I'm not sure what they had in mind. If you are into nature and animals, it is wonderful. If you want an amusement park or commercialized exhibit, this is not for you.

Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens

I love this zoo because it is the perfect size for small children. There is plenty to see but not so much that it wears everyone out. There is also a wonderful little train that my boys love. My favorite is the gorillas! There is also a fun hill that kids of all ages slide down on cardboard or anything they find that slides well. This is a great way to keep the kids busy getting their energy out while parents get to rest a bit. We will likely make this a yearly trip for us.
