About Me & My Family

We love to travel! We have just landed back in La Jolla after living 7 years overseas - 2 years in London and 5 in Hong Kong. My daughter was born in Hong Kong and we loved it there! Since I've done it so much, I just wrote a little ebook called "Surviving Long Haul Airplane Travel With Babies and Toddlers" that can be bought here: www.lulu.com/lajollamom

Worst Travel Moment With My Kids:
When my daughter was a baby, she screamed the entire 15 hour overnight flight to Hong Kong. We were in business class paid for by my husband's firm. Can you imagine how angry you'd be if you paid $9000 for your ticket and sat next to that?

"By far the best hamburger in San Diego"
Hodad's was featured on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" on the Food Network for a good reason. But because of the show, you really shoud go at an off-peak time otherwise you'll wind up waiting. We went at 11am on a Friday and it was crowded, but we were seated within a few minutes.

Look up "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives Hodad's" on YouTube and see how they cook the bacon on their burgers. The bacon is like nothing I've ever had on a burger. Crispy and flavorful. Don't skimp - order it. The last burger I ordered there had bacon, blue cheese and onions on it. It was decadent.

There is no kids menu but they have mini burgers which actually are the diameter of a McDonald's hamburger but filled with "stuff" inside. The shakes are enormous. My daughter and I shared one and only made it through half. The frech fries are wedge-cut. The do serve wine and beer.

The do have some pretty loud music playing and tons of license plates and funky decor all over the place. It's right near the beach in Ocean Beach. There's street parking and a lot across the street that may be full on peak summer days.

Nonetheless, your whole family will enjoy the food here!

"I'm not a vegetarian but I love this place"
I admit that I've never taken my daughter here, but felt compelled to review it once I saw it pop up in my search! I would bring here here though. "The Soj" as many of my SB friends call it, is very good. Just because the options are vegetarian or vegan, doesn't mean that it's not delicious. I had a curry tofu dish last time that I wish I had the recipe for. The ambience is cozy and casual. The staff is super nice and the customers are loyal. Love it.

"Gorgeous at sunset!"
I have been coming to Steanrs Wharf since I was about 5 or so. We had a second home just north of Santa Barbara so I used to drive onto the wharf with my dad for fishing bait. It's so cool to drive out on to the ocean. There's usually plenty of parking but if you're coming to Santa Barbara Shelfish or any other place on the wharf, plan for extra time to walk around.

My daughter had just turned 3 when we took her to Santa Barbara Shellfish. I ordered fish and chips which were delicious and we sat at one of the picnic tables outside. There were tons of seagulls landing nearby that she got a kick out of. It's literally at the end of the wharf so you sort of feel like you're dining in the ocean with the breezes and smell of sea salt. I don't remember what my daughter ate, but we all just really enjoyed ourselves. My parents still live in Santa Barbara and they eat here often.

"Great For Local Kids, And Also Those on Extended Vacations"
A lot of families spend the summer in La Jolla and need places for their kids to go. This little school is in the Bird Rock area and I would highly recommend it. Tap Fever offers tap, ballet, jazz, and other dance classes for kids and adults. My daughter is 4 and loves it.

While you will see quite a few local children in the classes, it is very easy to take drop in classes here. Just check the website for the schedule and call to make sure the class isn't normally crowded (this is rare). You can drop your child here and then grab a coffee or browse the shops on La Jolla Blvd. Classes are normally 45 minutes or so long.

It's a non profit center and you can tell that they are very passionate about what they are doing. There's no pressure, it's casual and fun. 5 stars, for sure.

Extreme Pizza | kids travel, kids activities
Extreme Pizza

"Reliably good food, fast delivery"
If you are visiting La Jolla, Extreme Pizza delivers for the times when the kids aren't up to eating out. Not only do they have gourmet pizza, but they have great salads and sandwiches too. I like the Wobbs salad which has fresh greens, bacon, blue cheese and grilled chicken. I've had every salad on the menu by now (we order them for catering purposes too) and all are good. When I order a salad from a pizza place, typically it's not fresh tasting. Not at Extreme Pizza - always fresh.

They have gluten free crust and if you're eating there, gluten free beer. We do eat in on occasion. It's a super casual place but well located in the Village and they have free WiFi. You can bring your dog and eat on the patio too.

My husband and daughter always order the Works pizza, which as you might imagine has a bunch of meats and veggies on it, but I actually like Drag It Through the Garden which frankly is the best vegetarian pizza I've ever had.

Owner is very nice too. Check the website for coupons.
