Historic Jamestowne
1368 Colonial Parkway,
Jamestown,
Virginia 23081
This whole recreated Jamestowne is a teacher's dream feild trip! There are 3 areas. A dock with the 3 ships that landed in Jamestowne. The indian village. and the recreated town of Jamestowne.
The dock is fun because there are sailors in full costume hanging out waiting to answer your questions. You can board the ships and go below to see what life on board would have been like.
In the town you can enter the church and other buildings. Some of them have real artifacts from Jamestowne in them.
In the indian village you can enter their homes and learn all about how life changed with settling of Jamestowne.
The tour guides are great with kids and really know their stuff! The museum is nice, especially if it is cold and raining (like it was when were were there).
Overall this is touristy and a bit corny - but your kids will love it! Afterall, it was recreated to teach them!

National Museum of Natural History
10th St & Constitutional Avenue,
Washington,
District of Columbia
"Make some time for this one..."
Dinosour bone, a whale hanging above you, an elphant at the front door and the Hope Diamond...all under one roof! This is the ultimate museum with everything you can imagine in one place (well everything natural anyway). If your kids are into animals, bugs, dirt, rocks, dinosours, indians...this is the place for them to check out!
We let our middle schoolers pair off and go exploring and they had so much fun, some of them didn't want to leave.
We didn't have time, but there was a 3-d theater with movies that looked amazing (but they cost extra)
Hint: Don't go the week after Easter - there are millions of schools there on feild trips!

Colonial Williamsburg
101A Visitor Center Drive,
Williamsburg,
Virginia 23187
Where do I begin? Just wondering through this town is a blast! You can step inside of the silversmiths, or the hat shop or anyother shop that is open and hear/see what does on inside! There are people in traditional colonial dress all over town. You have to stop at the stocks and take your picture!!
If you can get in on a tour do! There is so much you miss by walking through alone. We learned all about the signs, that to us are logo's, but were designed to literally mean what they picture on them.
After dinner we went on a Ghost Tour. We didn't see real ghost, but we did hear of strange happenings in the old buildings and of drama amongst their former inhabitants. It was great fun.
We also witnessed the militia practicing by torch light! Definitely something to check out!
Across the street from where people actually live and work in Williamsburg is a little spot full of fun shops where you can get a yummy carmel apple, a bonet and dress or your very own (cap) musket!!
This is the best way I know of for kids to experience history and relly become interested in it, because they are see and touch and hear it!
If you daughter has ever read the Felicity "American Girl" books she will love everything about Williamsburg!
With William and Mary College right there it is a great time to show your kids a potential college campus!

George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens
3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway,
Mount Vernon,
Virginia 22121
"Pretty, but you can't touch anything"
After standing in line for almost 2 hours we finally made it into the house only to find out that you can't actually enter any of the rooms or touch anything. Mostof the rooms are filled with "re-creations" which means they are all fakes. There are people stationed throughout the house to give you a bit of informationn about the room you are looking in to - that means if you talk while they are talking they glare at you - which was rough for my middle schoolers (and even me).
The view of the Potomac River from the Washington's back porch is AMAZING!! He definitely choose the right location for his house.
There is a little petting zoo area for sheep and lambs. I'd never seen a lamb up close...too cute for words!
You can also visit Washington's grave while you are there.
The muesum has several interesting videos and we learned a lot about George and Martha W.
On the dirve out there we saw several bald eagles - very exciting!
I'd skip this, unless you can go on a day without a million other people there.

Monticello
931 Thomas Jefferson Parkway,
Charlottesville,
Virginia 22902
"Beautiful and interesting!!"
In our 6 day tour of Virgina and DC this may have been oneof my favorite spots! The day we went it was overcast, raining and a thick layer of fog was hugging the property - which made you feel that Jefferson could walk around the corner at any minute! We loved it!
When you arrive you have to into the visitor's center and buy tickets for a "bus" ride up the hill to the house. Once you are up the hill you can roam freely. There is a line at the end of the walkway to the front door - this is for tours of the house. I highly recommend the tour. It is less then 30 min and points out all of Jefferson's fun gadgets and what they do!
While we were there the tulips were amazing and in full bloom, but the vegitable garden was empty. You can probably find out whats going on by checking their website.
At the end of the tour you can go under the house through the "secret passage way". Most of the relics in the rooms below are fake - this is dissapointing, but it give you an idea of what things would have looked like.
Can also visit Jefferson's grave - which some find interesting.
The house is beautiful and fun to see. I highly recommend this!
I'm not sure if you can take strollers into the house and little ones may not love this stop. I'd say 1st grade and older are fine.
