Hebron 'Rock Colony | kids travel, kids activities
Hebron 'Rock Colony
Old Turnpike Rd,
Boone,
North Carolina
"Hidden trail and rock climbing for all ages"
Hebron Rock colony is a great half day adventure for all ages. If you can find the trail head (almost hidden at the curve of a gravel road), you're on your way to a unique find in the NC mountains. Hebron features a short trail (0.5 mile) to a stream that features rock formations that can be traversed for another half mile. You can make your climb as easy or difficult as you like and the challenge will suit both the young and the old. Pack a snack or picnic lunch and spend a little extra time.

Old Hampton Store & BBQ
77 Ruffin St,
Linville,
North Carolina 28646
"Great BBQ, Old Timey Mill and Art Shop next door"
Old Hampton is always a treat and a regular stop on our trips to the High Country. The BBQ sandwiches won't disappoint and the Brunswick Stew is exceptional. Live music on the weekends adds to the atmosphere and you can shop in the General Store for trreasured items from your parents/grandparents past.

Blowing Rock Memorial Park
Main Street,
Blowing Rock,
North Carolina
"Great picnic spot for relaxing lunch"
Block Rock park is a great stop for the kids to burn off calories from Kilwin's ice cream shop across the street. The park is well maintained and offers a variety of stations from swings, to climbing walls to play equipment. My kid's favorite was the old style tree climbing. If you didn't bring lunch, stop in the Exxon station on the corner. It's probably the nicest gas station in America, with a stone exterior and gourmet sandwich and wine/cheese shop inside. Of course, there are plenty of great restaurants in Blowing Rock, so take your choice!

Grandfather Mountain | kids travel, kids activities
Grandfather Mountain
P.O. Box 129 - US 221 & Blue Ridge Parkway,
Linville,
North Carolina 28646
"A Western North Carolina Classic"
Grandfather Mountain may be overhyped, but it is still a can't miss attraction in the NC mountains for a family excursion. The swinging bridge and natural park/zoo provide great views and fun, and the trails can be navigated by the youngest explorerers. Beware high winds and cold temps on top in the winter.

Tweetsie Railroad | kids travel, kids activities
Tweetsie Railroad
300 Tweetsie Railroad Lane,
Blowing Rock,
North Carolina 28605
"Unforgetable for younger kids"
It's a slice of life in western North Carolina and worth a visit. Great for kids up to 10 and don't get a "burnin' cinder in your eye" riding Tweetsie. One day will pretty much allow to take it all in. Try to avoid the holidays if you don't won't to wait in lines.
