International Horseradish Festival
Woodland Park ,
Collinsville,
Illinois
"Very Entertaining!"
If you arrive in early June, you’ll be just in time for the International Horseradish Festival (www.horseradismfestival.com). Maybe you’ll want to enter the root toss or the horseradish-eating (on hot dogs) contest. You’ll also find the more typical crafts and a petting zoo at this free event.

Collinsville,

"So Cool!"
Along Illinois Highway 159 south of Interstate 55/70, you’ll come to Collinsville. Look for the World’s Largest Catsup Bottle, a 170-foot-tall steel water tank and tower. It was built in 1949 and restored in 1995, and it’s now on the National Register of Historic Places. (For merchandise or memorabilia, call 618-345-5598 or visit www.catsupbottle.com.)

"Check the Event Schedule!"
The Reuben Moore Home, 1 mile north of the Lincoln log cabin, was the home of Abe Lincoln’s stepsister, Matilda Hall, who married Reuben Moore and moved with him into the house in 1856. Lincoln was a dinner guest at this frame house. Special events are held throughout the year.

Galena Post Office | kids travel, kids activities
Galena Post Office
110 Green Street,
Galena,
Illinois 61036
"Send Your Friend a Postcard!"
Mail a postcard to a friend and see another bit of history at the same time when you stop in at the Galena Post Office. The Renaissance Revival building was constructed from 1857 to 1859 under the supervision of Ely Samuel Parker, a Seneca Iroquois Indian who was General Grant’s military secretary during the Civil War (1861–1865).

Parker would go on to become a brigadier general in 1867 and then be appointed U.S. commissioner of Indian affairs in 1869 by President Grant. The Galena Post Office is one of the oldest continuously operating post offices in the United States.

Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site
500 Bouthillier Street,
Galena,
Illinois 61036
"Very Historic!"
The Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site is one of the most famous places to visit in Galena. The Italianate house was built in 1860 and presented to General Grant
when he returned from the Civil War in 1865. Today it is owned and operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, which has taken pains to maintain the home as it appeared in Grant’s time. It has many original furnishings.
