About Me & My Family

Chelle Koster Walton combined her career as travel writer with her calling as a parent upon the birth of her son, Aaron, who immediately became her traveling companion. From her home on Sanibel Island, Florida, the author has written or contributed to numerous guidebooks—two of which won Lowell Thomas Awards—and magazine articles for FamilyFun, Caribbean Travel & Life, National Geographic Traveler, Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel, Endless Vacation, the New York Post, and other print and electronic media. Walton is cofounder of www.guidebookwriters.com and a member of the Society of American Travel Writers. Sara Kennedy is a longtime journalist and traveler. She began travel writing at Flying magazine in New York City and departed occasionally from news editing and reporting to write travel stories for various newspapers, including the Tampa Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer. For more than a decade, as her children grew up, she operated a Tampa freelance business, writing for the New York Times, FamilyFun magazine, Cooking Light, Hemispheres, Michelin's Green Guide to Florida, and Tampabay.Citysearch.com. She has edited a cookbook entitled Clarita's Cooking Lighter and contributed to the New York Times What's Doing Around the World.

South Beach
701 Brickell Avenue, Suite 2700,
Miami,
Florida 33131
"Fun with the Family"
This erstwhile bastion of winter-sun tourism has rerisen to its former glory, thanks to the redemption of South Beach’s Art Deco district.
SoBe, as it’s known in shorthand, is a place most suitable for adults. It makes for a fun morning drive (come late afternoon, Ocean Drive traffic stops to a crawl and parking is near impossible), and Lummus Beach provides a lot of action for older children with its water-sports rentals and sidewalks perfect for biking and in-line skating (rentals are available on the beach). There are two playgrounds for the younger kids. Topless sunbathing occurs with frequency.

Little Hickory Island | kids travel, kids activities
Little Hickory Island
26082 Hickory Blvd,
Bonita Springs,
Florida 34134
"Fun with the Family"
Located in southern Lee County near Bonita Beach, a shelly, white-sand beach combined with a feeling of seclusion is the main attraction at this beachfront park. A ramp runs from the parking lot to the sand, allowing handicapped access, and the shore is wide and clean. Surf fishing is a favorite pastime for visitors here, with locals and tourists alike raving about abundant catches. The beach offers restrooms, picnic tables, and showers.

Gasparilla Island State Park

Boca Grande,

"Fun with the Family"
The park around this hundred-year-old lighthouse provides a good place for a picnic and swim. Stay out of the waters in Boca Grande Pass; they’re deep and swift.
