Worst Travel Moment With My Kids:
Absolutely torn up tire on the side of the Grapevine driving south toward Frazier Park. It literally exploded apart off our F-150. I was trying to protect my daughter from the heat and sun while watching 18-wheelers blaze by not 10 feet from us.

Islands
12224 Carmel Mountain Road,
San Diego,
California
"Fun, yummy and healthy"
We have liked going to Islands for a while. Casual and fun atmosphere, decent prices and good burgers. On our last visit, I tried a veggie burger and really enjoyed it. Also, I appreciate that they have a non-french fry option for my daughter. They brought her carrot sticks and applesauce instead - she loved them. When I sent in a positive review on their website, I got an email back within a couple days with a personal message letting me know that they were happy to hear from me and sending my message on to the specific restaurant.

Doheny State Beach | kids travel, kids activities
Doheny State Beach
25300 Dana Point Harbor Drive,
Dana Point,
California 92629
"Good for camping"
We have camped here two years in a row and really enjoy it. The sites are small and near the train tracks but we were able to fit a small trailer, two vehicles, a 4-person tent, a shade tent, and a table for the kids just fine. The bathrooms are nice and the showers are great. The sites are very close to the beach. The shoreline can be very rocky but the kids can enjoy playing in the sand.

You can also go over to the day-use area. They have plenty of picnic tables and barbeques, and you can even reserve them. There's a snack shack that rents multi-person bikes and public restrooms.

This beach is close to both Los Angeles and San Diego, good for a weekend campout without having to drive too far.

JW Tumbles

San Diego,

"Great for birthdays"
We have been to this particular location (http://ranchobernardo.jwtumbles.com/) at least 5 times, twice for my own daughter's birthday parties (3rd and 4th) and we love it. We've also done several Kids Night Out events, when we leave our daughter there for 3 hours to play with other kids, have dinner, play, and calm down at the end with a kid-appropriate movie. Lots of great activities and things to play on, wonderful people who work there (Sarah, Mark, Allen, Zohal, Robin). The parties are great because they help with set-up and clean-up and they provide organized and supervised activities for the kids - relays, games, a zip line, etc. Parents can sit back and watch, rather than needing to hover over their children constantly (although parent involvement is welcomed and even encouraged in some activities). They also do activities at my daughter's day care.

My Kids Clubhouse | kids travel, kids activities
My Kids Clubhouse
12636 Poway Road Suite 4,
Poway,
California 92064
"My Kid loves this Clubhouse"
My Kids Clubhouse in San Diego has two locations(Poway and Bonita), but the Poway location is closest to us. It's a great place to let your young kids run free. There's a separate space for really young ones (kids in diapers), a snack area with tables for adults and kids and snacks/coffee/etc for sale at decent prices, an open area with lots of toys, and a climbing area with 3 slides. They have Wi-Fi, memberships, party rooms, and events. We have the membership, so we can go for just an hour if we want, and we can get our friends in with a discount, too.

Strawberry Creek Bunkhouse
25525 Highway 243,
Idyllwild, California
"Fun, cozy, very welcoming"
We have stayed at the Bunkhouse twice (once when it was the Atipahato Lodge). The cabins are amazing and the rooms are very cute. Reasonable prices. You can get a breakfast basket delivered from their nearby Bed and Breakfast with fresh scones. It's near the town, but not in the middle of it. It's a great place to stay for either walking around the very cute town or if you're looking for snow. The nearby Nature Center can be a great place to play when the snow really piles in, and then you can go inside to warm up (or use the facilities!)
