"Kid Friendly and Educational"
A free interactive and informative museum focusing on nuclear power. We took our 2 young children who were entertained with pressing buttons, but my husband and I were very interested in the exhibits. We ended up learning a lot! The museum is right next to the Oconee Nuclear Power Station. This was definitely an interesting and worthwhile activity to do if you are in the area. I'm sure school-aged children would appreciate the exhibits more than toddlers or preschoolers.

"Great accommodations"
We stayed in a 2 bedroom cabin at Devil's Fork State Park for 4 nights in the fall of 2008. The cabin was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was large, it had a full size fridge, stove, and microwave, and was fully stocked with dinnerware and silverware. The bedrooms were on the small size, but were adequate. One room had a queen size bed and the other had 2 twins. There was a really nice screened in porch with outdoor furniture and a picnic table. There isn't a lot of tourist attractions in the area, but the park is about an hour away from Greenville. It was a great and inexpensive get a way for my husband, our two young children, and me.

Manitou & Pike's Peak Cog Railway | kids travel, kids activities

"On Top of the World"
An amazing way to get a bird's eye view. The Cog Railway takes just over an hour to acend to the top of Pike's Peak. Along the way the conductor narrates facts, history, and some corny jokes good for a few giggles. At the top of the peak, there is an awe inspiring view of 5 states. It's gorgeous but freezing cold. We went in July and the temperature at the top was 42 degrees Fahrenheit with a Wind Chill Factor of 36 degrees with very strong winds. There was snow on the ground. If you go, make sure to wear long pants and bring a coat. There is a gift shop and cafe at the top. You are given about 30 minutes to look around, take pictures, and shop. Then another hour back down to the bottom. Round trip is about 3 hours long. We did not take our young children and were very glad we did not. I don't think they would have sat well for the long ride and would not have liked the cold and strong winds at the summit.

"Hands On History"
The Manitou Cliff Dwellings are a must see in Manitou Springs. I found it so interesting to be able to go in and touch and see how people lived. It's one thing to see pictures of cliff dwellings, but a whole other perspective to be able to tour them yourself. My son enjoyed going through the caves and cliff houses. Wear play clothes and shoes - it's very dusty and dirty in the cliff dwellings. We also saw an Indian dance demonstration which was very educational, beautiful, and amazing. The gift shop at the Cliff Dwellings was the biggest gift shop I've ever been in. It was interesting to browse through.

"Shopping for Tourists Galore"
Along the "Main Street" in Manitou Springs are little eclectic shops. You can find Colorado and Pike's Peak T-shirts & hats, Indian jewelry, and pretty much anything else a tourist could want to take home with them. Interspersed among the shops are great little eateries, art galleries, and a huge arcade. A great place to window shop and browse.
