The Menil Collection of Art
1515 Sul Ross ,

"Great Museum, just not for kids"
The art is really great but I usually leave the kids out of an outing here cuz it's really not meant for them. the only bit which could be interesting for them is the Cy Twombly exhibit - his art looks like it was fun and wild to do. But the musem does have a pretty green spot in between it's many small buildings - the kids can picnic, play on a swing (old fashioned one hanging from tree branch) and climb the big oak tree. In a pinch, the adults could take turns viewing the exhibits inside I guess.

Houston Arboretum and Nature Center
4501 Woodway Drive,
Houston,
Texas 77024-7708
This is a nice place to come for a walk with the kids - don't expect anything too structured. There is a discovery centre with lots of interactive displays at the visitors centre but other than that, it's just walking on your own, looking for stuff and enjoying the outdoors. It hasn't been crowded any of the times I've been, the trails are easy, well kept and posted, there are benches around the pond area. They're in process of making a small playground next to visitors centre which looks quite fun for the kiddos. Bring your own food and drinks and make a good half-day of it.

Houston Museum of Natural Science
One Hermann Circle Drive,
Houston,
Texas 77030
"Houston Museum Natural Science"
My kids like this place. It has a dinosaur fossil and prehistoric hall (big Diplodocus fossil and play at sorting fossils). The other exhibits are less good to me but provide some diversity - gems exhibit (for my 5-yr-old princess), seashell collectiion, wildlife exhibit (not living ones). There is an early american culture exhibit but I think that one is long overdue for an overhaul - wordy, colourless and dimly lit (and usually deserted). They also have a butterfly garden and IMAX/planetarium exhibit (the observatory is seperate, outside HOuston). We like the butterfly garden - very pretty and lots of butterflies. Can get quite hot and humid in there and strollers would be a bit of a struggle (can leave at the door). The on-site food is MacDonald's.

The Health Museum
1515 Hermann Drive,
Houston,
Texas 77004
Was rather disappointed during my trip there. They had an exhibit on humans in space travel but the theme seemed to go a bit off with more info on space itself than the human health thing. And the space info was too much and not presented in interesting way. The human body exhibit was better - some cute (giant walk-in mouth) and cool high tech bits (superimposed scan on you). A lot of psychological health which is difficult for kids to understand but the exhibit is too kiddish for big kids. All in, I think I wouldn't go back.

River Walk
E. Commerce St.,
San Antonio,
Texas 78205
This makes for a nice stroll when the weather is cool. Have been twice and things always seem to be happening - street parades in the area (above the river) or craft fairs. There's lots to choose from for food and little shops. It is atmospheric and the kids get to be on the move. Never got to try the boat tour cuz the queue was so long. Really not a place for strollers cuz there are so many people packed in (evenings) and the ground not even.
