"Learning How to Ski? This is THE PLACE."
This is not fancy like Squaw Valley's ski school, but my kids prefer this place. We had to get them fitted into boots and skis and then drop them off with their instructors, which was a bit nutty, but thankfully, we started on a not-very-busy day and kept our gear for the next very-very-busy-President's-Day-weekend-madness.
There are just two lifts: Snowbird and Eagle Rock, and they are adjacent to each other. The learning center for older kids and private lessons is located right between the two lifts. The snowflakes area, for kids 3-6, is also really, really, close by the lifts. You can literally ride the snowbird lift, and look for your child at the snowflake area.
We sure did. And it was cool to see her ride the little escalator to come down a bunny hill. Even though she was signed up for a group lesson, she was really getting 1:1 attention.
Our 6 year old, loved it too. He got on the eagle rock lift, and could not get enough of it.
We also liked the fact that we did not have to break the bank to put them in ski school.
Also, there is microwave at the bar/grill upstairs so that you can bring your own food and not have to consume those typically junky food served at ski lodges.
Overall, good bang for your buck and lots of fun.

Squaw is really for experienced skiers. Not worth the money if you are starting out, like us.
The village is charming, and it is nice to have yummy places to eat that are so close to the lifts.
Maybe when we master the black diamonds, we will be back.

Squaw Kids Snowsports School

In theory, Squaw Kids is great.
In theory.
We went over Christmas weekend, and it was PACKED. It took a long time to check the kids in, and with the special holiday rate, it was about $300, (or was it $400, I tried to pour brain bleach on that fact,) each morning for both of my kids to be in ski school.
Was it worth the money and hassle? Perhaps.
In exchange for the money, we did get to just check the kids in, without having to fit them for boots and skis, which was very nice.
My 3 year old was with one other child for her lessons. The first day of her lesson, she refused to put on her skis. They called us and we had to pick her up. (Our instructor from the adult school though, offered to just take her along. She LOVED that! He just guided her and taught us how to ski.) The second day, I heard she went out on the slopes. I didn't actually see her ski.
My 6 year old really enjoyed his time, but he had enough after the 2 1/2 hours and did not want to stay for lunch and continue for the afternoon.
The instructors were energetic, kind, and sweet.
The ski school was pretty far from the other areas, which made it hard to check in to see if the kids are doing well.
We were late to picking them up both times, because, the kiddie lessons ended BEFORE the adult lessons, and it always took longer to get to them than planned. The coordinator was kinda mad at us...
Anyway, I would do it again, but not over holiday weekends when they charge peak rates and when everyone else is also there.

I suck at skiing. Let's just be honest and say that up front.
Therefore, I practically had to throw myself down "Mountain Run", which, according to my very kind skiing instructor, should have been within my abilities. He was either delusional or overly complimentary. While I sat on the slope and made peace with the fact that I was going to be there until snow patrol came for me at 4:30, I was starving. STARVING.
Thankfully, I was rescued by the ski instructor, who was just coming down the hill after he had done some more fancy skiing himself. Anyway, by the time I got down the slope, I was ready to eat.
My husband and kids were waiting for me at Twenty-Two Bistro & Bar. (He had to leave me on the slope to fetch our kids, who were at ski school.) I ordered a salad- THE BEST SALAD ever. (Why DID I order a salad after that experience? I had no idea.) The hubby and kids enjoyed sliders, fries, sandwiches, and it was all very yummy.
Reasonably priced too.

My kids love, love, love sushi. When we were at Squaw over Christmas, they very much wanted to have sushi there too.
The setting was cozy and comfortable. The food was ok- the best dishes were not sushi items, but the salmon over rice items. Portions were on the small side- after a day on the slopes, we wanted to EAT.
I was taken aback by the prices- I understood that we were up in the mountains, these fish had to travel quite far, and I was willing to pay more. However, $4.50 for a cup of miso soup?! Really? It was just water and miso paste!
Overall, yummy but too expensive.
