About Me & My Family

My husband and I have 4 kids... 3 boys and then our girl. We homeschool them all and travel when possible. We just started letterboxing and are finding ourselves a little obsessed with it.

Walking the meadows of Yosemite with my family. The quiet, the sparkling water, the rustling grasses, and a dip in the river made for an amazing day.
Worst Travel Moment With My Kids:
Anytime throw up is involved. Especially when one kid triggers another. And when we are in the car. And when they choose to use the box that is holding all their library books and toys.

Tide-pools that are Kid Friendly in San Diego

Kids love walking through the waves and searching the rocks for the hidden crabs, sea anemones, and star fish of tide pools.  There are quite a few great tide pools in San Diego County.  Check tide charts online to find a good time to go at low tide.

Enter this state beach via Basilone Road off I-5. A cobblestone tide pool area can be found north of the campground.

"Hike to the beach"
During our camping trip at San Mateo Campground which is about 1 1/2 miles inland from the beach of San Onofre, we drove into the State Beach area off of Basilone Road.  The $15 entrance fee was waived because of our camping pass.

We drove south on the frontage road that parallels the 5 freeway until we reached the other camping and beach access areas of San Onofre Bluffs.  We got all of our things out, started down the trail to the beach, and realized that we had a long trail, steep cliffs, and about 200 feet of elevation drop down to the water.  Going down might not be a problem, but we knew going up would be.

Perhaps the beach would have been perfect for the day... and perhaps other families have had a great experience, but we decided to pack up our things and head to San Clemente State Beach where we knew the sand and water were a short walk from the parking lot.

Descend the wooden stairs from the parking lot to the beach below. There is an extensive flat area of tide pools. Parking lot may get full quickly especially during summer, holidays, and weekends.

At the base of Point Loma below the lighthouse of Cabrillo National Monument is a large section of tide pools that are great to explore at low tide.
