About Me & My Family

We are a family of 5 who travels together several times a year, but not always to destinations far, far away. Most of our trips have been to places within 2/3 hours of our home so as not to have the biggest memory of our trip be the travel. We took a big step a few summers ago by embarking on a 5-hour journey to Williamsburg, VA for a weeklong vacation, and thankfully it was a huge success. Since then, we have also done a 7 hour trip to Cape Cod and another 7 hour trip to Vermont as well as two trips that required longer plane rides (which can be a challenge with a child who gets motion sickness). Our memories so far are good ones, and it has been fun to see more and more places in our region of the country, so who can ask for more than that?

Places to inspire the artistic child in PA

Places in Pennsylvania to take your art-enthusiast child to inspire him or her, or to just enjoy some creative time together.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art offers plenty of Family Programs that allow children ages 3-12 and parents to learn, create, and most important, have fun together. Great place to just look if you're not inclined to get messy, or feel free to participate in a class if you're feeling adventurous!

Children of all ages are able to celebrate their love of art here. Look for special events and summer camp programs for youngsters (ages 3-6) as well as drawing, painting and comic book classes for older gradeschoolers, middle school kids, scouts and other groups. Opportunities to be both a spectator or participant, depending on your preference!

An amazing local "garden" open to the public. Constructed using all kinds of used items including bicycle parts, bottles, tiles and more! Great for a fascinating, yet non-messy art encounter, as you just walk through and look!

Create with Crayons - see how they're made and what they can do! Perfect for toddlers and preschoolers (although gradeschoolers would also like it) as there are a lot of hands-on opportunities to create. Not very messy, as crayons are used, which clean up well. You can take your masterpieces home, too!

"A very colorful destination!"
I have taken my kids to the Crayola Factory many times when they were various toddler and preschool ages. It has been an annual event because they like it so much. You can get discounts for tickets through Entertainment or KidStuff type books. Even if you pay full price, it's not outrageous.

The place is several floors and you receive a map when you arrive. There is PLENTY to do here. We usually just went floor to floor and gravitated to what the kids wanted to do next. There are coloring activities, model magic activities, opportunities to use chalk and melted wax, a screen to dance in front of, a little kiddie play area, marker fun and so much more. Your kids can also take home any project they create, which is awesome. I would advise going any other months than July or August, as many, many summer camps come here. It can get tremendously crowded then, which is a bummer for anyone trying to enjoy the place. If you have time when the older kids are in school, this place is ideal. Your kids will enjoy trying all of the activities and exploring all that Crayola products can do. A fun "factory" tour which is always voted one of the best in the country.

"Paint Your Own" ceramic and craft studio where you can make your own masterpiece! Better for slightly older kids who can create and paint better (and maybe stay a tad neater). The Mud Room will finish your pieces and contact you for pickup at a convenient later date. Nice opportunity to create a keepsake you and your kids make together.

A wonderful annual event worth putting on the calendar! Opportunities to see art on display as well as do some of your own. Great for all ages, although older kids will have more stamina to walk around and appreciate the displays.

Create a beautiful piece of jewelry or something special out of beads and gems! Pottery to paint as well! There are Mommy/Daddy and me classes for younger kids as well as opportunities for older children to make projects of their own. Beading is obviously less messy, but requires more coordination. Pottery painting can be done by all.

The Art Museum has contemporary art perfect for all ages to walk around and enjoy. Watch for classes/special events/drop-in-programs for all ages (toddlers to teenagers) to learn more about art. For toddlers there are gallery playdates, for families there are treasure hunts and educational tours, and for older kids there are classes on ceramics, drawing, painting, architecture, & performance art.

Non-mainstream art as well as a range of classes, community outreach programs and a store. Great opportunity for to take a walk around and enjoy a different kind of art. Also, because families are a highly valued audience, SCC offers the Drop In Studio. This free, hands-on activity space for children and adults remains open during all public hours. The Drop In Studio encourages visitors to participate in a hands-on art activity that have been developed by artists to tie-in to our special exhibitions. Other classes available for teens/adults.

Cool cartoon art for all ages to see and try! Older children interested in comics would probably get the most out of this since they know and understand comics. Great for a child (or parent) interested in comics or drawing! Camps in summer for ages 6-12 years.

Art classes throughout PA and MD in painting and drawing. Camps available as well as special programs and classes for kids aged 4-15, grouped accordingly. All kinds of opportunities for kids to create masterpieces and take their projects home!
