About Me & My Family

We are a family of 5. We love to travel and to see new things. We look for a educational experience in everything we do and my we do a lot. Our kids are so used to being on the go that they have tremendous stamina. We try to plan 2 large trips every year and supplement them with weekend get-aways, staycations and a day jaunt now and again. Our kids are always wondering what the next spot will be.

Worst Travel Moment With My Kids:
Two of my kids got lost at a campground in Yellowstone. My 9 year old son took his 6 year old sister on a walk to the restroom 4 sites down and couldn't find their way back. We ended up reporting them missing at the camp check in and then the search began. I was afraid of them being abducted, but also of the Grizzlies which were out in full force that summer due to the late melt. It was the worst 45 minutes of our lives. A fellow camper overheard my husband relay the story to the camp personnel and she recognized them as she returned to her site 7 loops away from ours. The ranger was called and returned them safely to us. The employees were great and it was a happy ending to a potential disaster.

Places to cool off with kids in Connecticut

When summer beats us up with big heat, head for one of these spots to cool off with the kids!!! Outdoors you can find some great water attractions. Indoors are some fun spots to burn off energy with the help of AC when rain or storms keep you inside.

Lake Compounce is the full package amusement park. Even if you do not want to ride on a hot day, go to the lake!!! There is a guarded swimming area and the largest water park in Connecticut for some serious water fun! they just opened the Riptide Racer and also have a lazy river, ship wreck area, wave pool, and many water slides.

"Annual pass holders"
We love to go to lake Compounce and consider ourselves lucky to have it so close to home. There are rides for all ages, including a great kiddie land area. There are a lso 3 great coasters including a loop and a mountain side fast coaster. Our kids love the coasters (8 year olds) but also the ghost hunt ride, log flume and water park. It never gets overly crowded here like some of the big parks (admittedly we might go at off times so this may not always be the case.....but I feel we and the park are creating some great childhood memories for our kids here!!!!

Quassy is a smaller amusement park but they still have a beach and water park option for some cool fun. There are water slides and Saturation Station for 'bucket dumping".

"Old fashioned Family Fun"
This park is a throw back to older non gargantuan theme parks. We live close by so this is an easy day trip diversion for us. The kids like to go on the rides, but also enjoy the small water park area, beach and paddle boat rides. This park in one I went to as a kid and not much has really changed in the last 40 years, but it is a neat, clean day trip diversion.

Tubing on the Farmington River is a 2 hours 2.5 miles wet ride with rapids if the water is high enough. Children must be at least 50lb and 4 feet tall.

Wadworth Falls is a state park with a small beach area. However, we usually forgo the beach and head for the falls. You can hike to the falls or if you are feeling lazy or it is particularly hot drive to them. Park and walk on down. The bottom is quite rocky so water shoes are in order. Hold onto the hand of little ones as they play near the age. Older kids can take a swim with an adult to the falls.

"Refreshing Falls"
The falls here are beautiful and the trails to get to them are nicely maintained. However, the trails are not easy to follow and we are well worn hikers. The falls are also close to a parking area which is great for accesability but bad for numbers of people. There also seems to be a 'party' crowd attracted to this area. If there were more families and less smokers and drinkers, we might go back to the falls. Otherwise, I'd say we've seen our last of the falls. We might go back for a hike, but the mystique of the falls is not enough to get us back there although they are beautiful. There is also a swimming hole at this state park. However, it is often contaminated and evaporated

The Brownstone quarry is a place of adventure where you get wet. High dives, zip lines into water, inflatable playscapes, swimming and more.Kids under 3 are free and life vests are complimentary. You will enjoy this park more with older, more independent kids.

Go to the beach on Long Island Sound. There is also a board walk here and arcade games for the kids.If ocean swimming is not your thing there is also a splash park and pool at the beach with a carousel. You can definitely stay cool here.
