Where to enjoy Holiday Lights in San Francisco

The City by the Bay provides plenty of opportunity to admire Holiday Lights. So be merry and enjoy the Holidays!

Drink a hot cocoa from the Ghirardelli Cafe while admiring the Christmas Tree located in the square. Walk a bit and you will have a full view of the Golden Gate. It is does not get better than that.

"Love the chocolate fountains"
We really enjoy going to the Ghirardhelli chocolate place and look at the chocolate fountain with the chocolate being 'made' right there. We never actually had snacks or ice cream there but the people we saw who were, seem to have a nice time! The rest of the stores are really nice but they seem a little bit on the expensive side.

"A tourist trap but a nice one"
There are so many things to do at the Fisherman's wharf between listening to the Sea Lions, discover Pier 30, take a ferry to Alcatraz or another city on the Bay, museums, aquarium, food, etc etc. And street performers of course...Of course it is a tourist trap but it is a nice one where you will not discover the real San Francisco for sure but your family will have a good time!

"Centrally located "
When you are in Union Square,  you are in the center of San Francisco. The Square is very pleasant to sit at and enjoy a drink. It is the starting place of many things to do in San Francisco. You are a mere blocks away from the start of the cable car, the Westfield mall with the stores and theaters, the Metreon center, the SF MOMA, the Jewish Museum and much more. For Christmas, it is beautifully decorated and there is a ice-skating rink to enjoy!

Come on 501 Stanyan street and come see 'Uncle John's tree. The Golden Gate Christmas Tree is named after the John McLaren, the architect of the park. The tree is more than 100 years old.

"So many things to do"
It will be difficult for families to not find something they like to do at the Golden Gate Park. Art, floral, and science museums, Japanese Tea Garden,  buffalos, lake, flowers, playgrounds, concerts, etc etc, name it, the Park has it. On Sundays, some parts of the park are closed to cars so you can ride your bike or roller blade safely.

"Beautiful building"
San Francisco City Hall is well worth visiting. It is a beautiful building with a majestic rotunda. You can visit it on your own or you can take a guided tour.
The exterior is very interesting to look at. I do not really like the area but I have to say that between the Opera, the Symphony Hall, and the Asian Art Museum, there is definitely a lot to look at and show the kids.

"The little zoo that could"
We love the Oakland zoo and kept a membership for years. Now that my children are bigger, they have less interested in zoos but they younger, they definitely spent happy hours there. Do not start by their children zoo,it is so enjoyable that your children will not want to leave to explore the rest ofthe place. IT is small but it seems to be a very caring place for animals, they really seem to have much more space to roam than many zoos. They have rides just outside the zoo with a train ride that is a little bit cheesy, I have to say...

Take a stroll on Christmas Lane in that small in the Bay. Almost every house is decorated with its own special style. My kids' favorite is the gingerbread story home as well as the cartoons character, they are different each year (make some bets before you go to see who can guess which movie character it is going to be this year). Santa is here every day till December 23rd starting at 6:30 pm and we will stay one hour and a half. Drop your letter to Santa in the mailbox, he will write you back. Lighting starts at 5:30 pm.

"Charming little block"
This block of Thompson Avenue is full of lights and Christmas characters all December. If you come between 6:00 pm and 8:30 pm, your children can have their picture taken with Santa (for free). There is a donation box. There is also a  mailbox. If you post your letter to Santa, you will receive a response to your letter. We have two children and they both received their own personnalized letter. Nice thought.
We go to Christmas Lane every year and we always have a nice time spotting new decorations or recognizing new ones.
